I wonder if that board would dig into the water in a turn. There are fine points of rudder design that will encourage the boat to lean to the inside of a turn. It has to do with the angle of the rudder hinge line.

When you steer the boat into a left turn, will it lean to the right?

When you posted photos of your boat I did a google search and saw a discussion on an air boat forum where a guy was talking about the angle of the rudder post as well as the angle of the trailing edge of the rudder, and how these factors will affect the way the boat leans when turning.

I never thought of this stuff before.

Nor I- but thanks for bringing it up! I haven't done the rudders yet so it's not too late to "turn back" if you'll pardon the lousy pun. Seems to me, this could make the difference between one that steers nicely and one that digs in and flips. More homework required!

If I'm interpreting Robbie's post correctly, it's more of a matter of the "kingpin angle" of the rudder (to put it into terms we might better understand here) and the shape/angle of the back edge of the rudder. Since I have not yet researched this and have no further information, I'm just guessing here- but I can picture why...

Now that I'm reading the info it looks as if you would do OK with a single rectangular rudder, but you want to take care with the height. I like what they're saying about dual rudders arranged like an A frame. I'll probably do that when I get around to building an airboat.

My favorite part of this page is the guy's signature file: IF IT DONT RUN ON DRY GROUND
IT AINT A AIRBOAT!
