That pic is hillarious. How far away were you standing when you pulled the string. :D :D

About 20' ....behind a stainless bbq grill for a shield....the drill press turns pretty slowly and I didn't try to go through in one shot....so the chances of an explosion were actually pretty slim....

Also...the duct tape looks bad....but there are two boards to keep the cylinder from rolling (that would have to be clamped) and the cylinder....(which I probably would have used hose clamps for)....That's a lot of crap and a lot of time.....The only clamp I used was a pipe clamp to clamp the base of the drill press down....

So....probably the only thing in danger was the drill press and the shed...

It will be awile before I use it.....but I had the drill press and unibit handy.....

Ohhh crap, that was great!!!!!!!!! and scary............
Glad it worked out and all is intact.

Google up "Rednecks shoot a propane tank".....(maybe a helpful member will post a link...hint...hint....)

Anyway....I messed with the prototype today....but my phone is being stubborn....(actually it's probably my IP....).....anyway maybe tonight I'll post some pics and text......

OK.....So the first thing today was to finish the jackshaft shaft and bushings.....then square and brace up everything.......

The piston still wanted to rock a bit and jam....so I added the block behind the wrist pin (top of pic 3)......

Time to add the motor and check out the cycle rate.........

Sorry for the multiple posts.....but I don't trust my phone tonight.....a shot of the front blocking......

And....I found a belt that tensioned up just by snuggling up to the jackshaft box.....so....duct tape wasn't handy....:lolgoku: ....so I screwed a few scraps on with some drywall screws for a quick clamp.....

Plugged her in and the cycle rate is awesome!!!!!!!! Plenty slow enough for gravity....(I can always make it go faster....as is...I could just about use the 3400 rpm motor....).....

Now I just need a nose end and I can crush cans.....and it's on to Can Crusher 2!!!!! Stronger....faster....better!!!!!

Next post....video....(but I don't think it will work) .....probably need to open a YouTube account......

Edit: Yeah....didn't work.....rats!!!!

Well I knew that was too easy.......:censored:

I had a feeling this might happen.....it's not going to be the neat little compact package I hoped for.....

While viewing the short cycling video....I spotted something I missed in real life......it's running backwards! !!!!....:mad2:

Maybe someone will post a link here...but you can see it run on YouTube.....it's "Poboy Crusher "......

:roflol: I thought it was going to have the correct rotation....and didn't give it too much thought...because I knew the only solution is to turn the motor around....

I just need to make a mount for it....I may make it removable for easier carrying and more compact storage....

I just won't be crushing cans in 20 mins. like I thought.....

Well.....One step forward....two steps back....

I had it going.....dropped in a can....and boom....stopped dead in it's track when it hit the can.....

I think the motor has plenty of power...and even with the barely assembled motor mount....that side seems fine....

For those that have followed and remember.....I said the drive wheel had a hop in it....and it would have been a good thing if the belt got tighter through the crush zone....(which it didn't) ....I thought then I may have to make a tensioner idler.....and probably will....because that's the weak point.....it hits the can and the belt slips at the jackshaft......

Also....I said at the start....this was a prototype....and I was going to build it to a level that I thought would meet the very minimum requirements....so that all the potential weak spots would fail....and I could be confident that upgrading the next one would insure success.....

Ironically....I tried so hard to slow this thing down....that if it were just a hair faster....it would probably crush cans with momentum....

All in all....I'm pretty happy at this point....I've learned a lot...and have a semi-working prototype so I can modify each part for better performance....
