ok when i try to make my engine idle it doesn't work it seems like it's going 5000 rpm. whenever i adjust the butterfly nothing changes also when i play with a screw that has a spring on it on the side of the carb it makes it go faster/slower. i thought this was supposed to be the butterfly's job not the screw

i definately need to remove the governor because it's screwed up and this is a really old engine anyway. the governer keeps on idle making the butterfly go up and down causing the engine to surge. should i remove the governor?

yes http://www.affordablegokarts.com/govenor-removal.php i know it may not be your engine but same principle. and the screw with the spring is to richen or lean out your engine. Used for idle and when you take off. like if you take off and it bogs down its either lean or rich not really sure wich one but you can mess around with it and get it to were it idles fine and to were it has a good reaction time.

today i set up the throttle on the engine, removed the pneumatic governor, cleaned out the gas tank, removed carbon deposits from cylinder head, piston, and valves.

now i have to put in new oil, get and install a new ignition solid state armature, and clean the carburetor, get a clutch, and get a exhaust system.

my ignition armature has breaker points.
it's a very old style ignition armature.
it doesn't have a boot to attach to the spark plug lead, just a circular piece of metal.
if your hand get's close to that metal it releases a painful shock which is hazardous. also the newer ignition armatures are simpler in design.

this engine had a different kind of governor
it had a pneumatic governor as opposed to a mechanical governor. it was easy to take off. i used the governor spring to make the throttle.

currently the engine is separated from the gas tank and the carburetor.

i think i still need to lap the valves

by doing research, i know this engine was made earlier than 1983

the reason i don't like my armature is because at the end of the lead there is no boot, just a metal circle and if i get close to it i get shocked. however, i won't replace it if there is an effective way of protecting me and other people from getting shocked

Im sure you can still buy boots...look on ebay. Or cover it in a bunch of electrical tape.

Most older small coils did not use a boot. A shorting clip was used to kill/ground ignition by pressing it against top of exposed plug wire. Was very common at one time.
Jolt you get won't kill ya'.
Had a girl friend whose father would check car ignition by grabbing open plug wires while engine was running.
To see him just 'shake it off ', like nothing happened, truly amazed me. He told me he was used to it.
