Please post pictures of your brake procedure, I am really interested in your build and you have really a great design idea! Your build is going to be one of a kind for sure! May I ask if you have an idea on your front spindles as what you are going to use or do? I am just curious and interested! Thanks

As of right now, to keep things very simple I hope to use the Azusa 6" drum brake.

And mount it outboard of the chassis on the left rear just as on my Rupp Dart. I think it will require an extra hole in the side rail for the actuating arm.

As far as the front spindles I want to order those from Azusa as well, and if I am satisfied with their geometry I will just use them.

But I am not counting out having to make my own with a 7 or 10 degree inclination and making sure the ackerman is correct for my design.

The front axle will be steel tubing with some steel angle for bolting it to the floor pan and side rails. It will also have mounting tabs for the lower steering column mount.

A long way to go yet, but at least it looks a bit like something.
I am not liking this .090" thickness, its very hard to work with, and to calculate bends.
I am really hoping the .063" will be much more user friendly and still have the strength needed.

Well I have been collecting bits and pieces, and found a set of Azusalite rims and narrow front slicks. Just need to come up with some rear old school slicks, an axle and a some front end parts.

But I am really liking the looks of this thing so far, even just as a mock up.

Well, parts are trickling in. I received a new pair of rear tires and tubes, and mounted those up to the Azusalite rear rims. I also received a pair of new Azusa style 5/8" front spindles, and brackets. My plan is to cut off the steering arm and reposition it in a neutral spot on the spindle so the spindles can be swapped side for side and flipped to raise and lower the front of the kart. At this point to raise the rear would be to replace the rear tire & wheel combo with a taller set. But I am still mulling over a way to make the rear axle and motor mount adjustable.
This was another mock up, just prior to me getting the new rear tires.

And on another related note.
I finally got a walking foot upholstery machine. Its not only a help with the kart upholstery, but I am teaching myself to do this so I can do the tuck and roll upholstery in my roadster. I also built a workbench/table for the sewing machine.




I am expecting to get the round tubing for the front axle this coming week, and hopefully will have a rolling chassis as soon as I get a rear axle and front wheel bearings.

Dude! That looks awesome. Check out desert Dueller's spindles he uses washer stacks to adjust the front height. Just wondering what did you use for a "plan" as far as wheelbase and width, seat position, steering wheel position etc...?

Chancer, thanks for chiming in. I did see his set up, and its really neat, we had the same thing on that oval track kart I got to run, with the washers. On this I was looking for a real quick way of turning the kart from a low slung ground hugging flat surface kart to one that could take a bit of bumps and such in a field or back yard. Currently the front of the chassis is 1 1/4" off the ground, by flipping the spindles over it would raise that to 2 3/4".

As far as "plan"....I dont need no stinking plan....
Actually my Rupp is very loosely the kin to this.
I like the Rupps proportions, but changed things a bit for some comfort, to accommodate the aluminum fabrication, to accommodate the parts I would like to use, and for the "look" I was after. I really want this thing to convey a sense of nostalgia (rear engine layout), and a sense of racing ancestry (the aluminum monocoque construction & slick tires). Ive also had a bit of help from the neighbor kid that mows my lawn, he will come over and size things up for me as well. I am hoping this actually works and drives well. There is a good chance that this will be powered by a 79cc Predator while the grandson drives it, till he gets the hang of things.

I love it "I don't need no stinkin plan" Me neither. I was thinkin maybe you used some Rupp general proportions. That's why I asked. I have a couple 79cc powered 98pound karts and with 60 pound drivers, still need a jack shaft on 13" tires.

Oh this thing is dragging, but now I have a deadline. The Grandson is scheduled for a visit the first week of August so it needs to be done by then. I think though, I may show it to him in a big heap of parts on the garage floor and spend the first day assembling it...we do a plastic model every year and maybe this would kinda take the place of that.

Anyhoo....the bits and pieces are trickling in. My steering column didnt show so I had to reorder that and added the clutch, a new sprocket, and some chain. Should be getting the lil powerplant soon as well. Still mocking things up but happy with the look, the stance and proportions so far. Hope it goes, stops and turns well.

Where the rear axle bearing flangette mounts to the kart chassis is two layers of aluminum. The portion that becomes the bumper is .125" and the side c-channel of the chassis is in this case .090". I at this point, dont foresee a huge issue, the karts that were built in the 60s similarly were only one thickness of .063. Time will tell....

So i gotta question..................

Is that Ray's original car being rebuilt or is it a clone ? And nice build by the way. My dad has that original magazine in my old bedroom as he has all the original small sized and alot more.
