my 1998 polaris scrambler is havin problems. this is the 2-stroke scrambler, not to be confused with the new 4-strokes.

The Problem

Lets move back a few months to june. I was out ridin at the pit and i let my mom and little sister ride it. They were just putin around slow.

they rode for 15 minutes and said it was sluggish. so i initially thought the plug got clogged. i got on a went WOT, it was sluggish and poor throttle response.

bout 10 minutes later it sputtered and died.

i pulled the plug when i dragged it home and it was nice and clean, it had oil and gas on it so i didnt know what to do.

NOW

I troubleshooted today and discovered the following

  1. New plug, REALLY good spark
  2. Excellent compression
  3. Havnt cleaned the carb, BUT it should start on starting fluid, right? it wont, no fire.

So i have come to the conclusion that its fuel related, BUT why wont it start on starting fluid?

Any help would be greatly appreciated
Thanks
Roman

I would take off both, just to make sure. If you don't run it very long it wont do any harm.

If it was mine i would, also make sure the air fliters clean. Take it off as well, but not at the same time or you won't know which ones causing the problem.

Yes, but with absolutely no exhaust when you shut off the engine the exhaust valves are cooled rapidly by the surrounding cool air. This can lead to the valve becoming brittle and it can crack/break.

Sure is a good thing that 2 strokes don't have valves :D

Seriously, lets not make this into another exhaust theory thread. YES armidillo you can run it for a few seconds without the exhaust. No harm will be done....(besides your exhaust valves burning up) - kidding..
