So I worked on the quad yesterday and got fire in the hole. I took the header pipe off, took the carb apart to clean, then I stuck that carb on, sprayed some wd-40 and got a few pops. I eventualy flooded the carb, good sign that it's not clogged anymore. I'm Having a tough time starting it now because of the sub zero temperatures lately, but i'm off again this mornin to fire her up!

You shouldn't have a problem getting it running in the cold. I fired up my old Honda spree moped the other day in 5* weather. Same as summer starting.

I hooked the exhaust back up. Then I cranked it and would get a pop every few seconds, with A LOT of backfiring out the exhaust, loud enough to hurt my ears. Then finaly, it started! It run for about 20 sec at idle, it did that twice within 10 min. The third time it started, I held half throttle and got about 10 seconds of life.

So I have come to the conclusion that it is a fuel problem, and I'm gonna go clean the carb, again.

Sounds to me like you might need new plugs?

Could the spark plug be the problem? I replaced it not to long ago and it has a nice strong blue spark. I just went through a really gave the carb a good cleaning again and it's doin the same thing start and run only at idle for about 10 seconds.
It really looks like a fuel related problem but it has new gas and a freshly cleaned carb...

Could timing be an issue?

I have blown plugs in less than a minute on a 2 stroke.

Alright, I'm done for the day, wasn't able to make it to the auto parts store for a fuel filter and spark plug.

So let me ask, if I have a bad or fouled plug, would it do this: start right away, run for 10 seconds, then die, won't start for another five minutes or so?

Entirely possible, when in doubt its almost always ignition related. Put putting around very well could have fouled the plugs and left enough oil to foul the next set. You seem to be noob to 2 stroke operation, always carry at least 1 set of plugs.

Fouled/bad plugs can do crazy things. Having the right plug can also make a world of difference.

AND a plug wrench (or NN vice grip).

Yup, definentaly a 2 stroke noob. When it comes to quads Ive always rode and raced 4 stroke, so it's a different story when I try to fix a 2 stroke.

Is there a good way to get any extra oil out of the cylinder? I know there's soMe in there cause when I took the header off and cranked it, it sprayed oil all over my wall.

I'll get a few extra plugs tommorow, thanks all...

Alright, I forgot to add that it is oil injection, never had a problem with that so I doubt it's a problem now

Made It to the auto store today! Got a fuel filter, TWO plugs, and some more of the best thing ever put in a can...starting fluid.

Can't tinker till Friday, I'll tell y'all how it goes.

I feel quite tarded now. I had no idea that two strokes were so picky. I popped in the new plug and that baby fired right up and ran great! Well, at least I know the carb won't have to be cleaned for a while!

1. You gotta ride it kind of hard to keep from fouling the plug, most 2 stokes don't like idling much.
2. It is VERY unwise to use starting fluid in a 2 smoker, if she backfires it can blow the reed cage apart.

I've known that two strokes don't like to idle because of a bike I used to have. It's just that this is the family quad and when my mom or little sister ride it they go too slow.

It's a cool quad though,

On demand 4 wheel drive
Beefy drive train

I can see why the new scramblers are 4 stroke because of problems like this, but putting this engine in this quad was a great idea. This thing hauls through dirt in the summer and 3 feet of snow like it's nothing!

So I'll have to teach my mother some better riding habits so this doesn't happen again!

Is it oil injected? if so it should be much more resistant to fouling plugs (in my experience that is).
