Yeah, I have some 1000 grit sandpaper; if I can cut the old hardware off, I was thinking of cleaning it up with that. I'd assume painting once assembled isn't a great idea. Is there anything you guys are doing to help keep them from rusting up so bad in the future?

The biggest problem I'm having on the smaller one is the gas tank is broken and leaking. The cap was stuck, and when I tried to free it, I apparently broke the threaded fitting on the tank, because now the fitting (with cap still attached) just spins and gas leaks out from under the cap. but...

Oh, and no they weren't driving them with no shoes, seatbelts, etc.. I had just bought them that day and they were just sitting in them. :-)
