At least for me, getting the axle off my streaker cart really sucked since the bearings were frozen to the axle. Mine was a 4 bearing differential. Normally you could unbolt the triangle bearing flanges, loosen the collars holding the bearings, and slide the bearings over an inch, allowing you to then drop the axle straight down. With the four bearing setup, two of the bearings are slid from the left, and two are slid from the right, and once they rust and get locked in place, you have to resort to cutting at least two bearings off. I ended up splitting the differential too; I'm not sure if it helped but it did allow me to work on one side at a time. My brake disks were frozen to the axle also, so having the diff split allowed me to replace the bearings without having to cut the disks off.
