Nice one Bill :) I got a bit carried away today and ordered some parts for the steering setup. It took 2 days and a post on another forum to find a UJ suitable for my new rack, it seems that a 5/8" UJ is un-available in the UK but luckily a hot rod builder came through for me. Not cheap at...

I already have bought 4 shocks, they are 13" in length, probably too long for the front but should be ok for the rears. It would be possible to add a riser block onto the rear subframe and attach the top of the shocks to the upper side tube as you suggest. Good idea Theo  EDIT - Just...

It sounds best if you pronounce it "Ohhh crap! Nid!" as you uncover another design flaw :)

Arachnid Build, ... or is it! (Highly Modified)

Bill could I ask how you determined the position of the steering rack? I assume you set it back so that it's parallell to a line joining the centre of the spindles.

I saw the pics Grizz, it dosen't look good. I left those stubby arms off the seat back because I wasn't sure how it was all going to line up, I was going to sort it out once the rear sub frame was mocked up. It had occured to me that those little arms are going to take a fair bit of force and...

Theo, only what you can see in my pics. The frame is very strong, I don't think it needs any more bracing. The rear sub frame, in my opinion, does need additional bracing for an engine over 10hp.

Thanks for the heads up Bill, I hope the designers are reading these threads and will address these issues in the plans. Quick question for you on the front wishbones. I take it you stuck to the dimensions for them as detailed in the plans. Could you measure the distance from the pivot point to...

Grizz - The transmission set up will be sprocket on the reduction gearbox linked via chain onto another sprocket on the solid rear axle. I haven't considered a method of mounting the engine yet, but from what I understand I need some method of tensioning the chain by adjusting the engine mount...

Mikko - The parts I stretched were the MF115-1507 and the MF16-90 by 5". If your 6'4" then you need to stretch by at least 7" over stock maybe more. It's pretty tight were your feet sit and if you have big feet then it might even be worth widening the front too. Might be a good idea to cut some...

Made some nice progress today, the main chassis is now welded up and pretty much complete. The seat fits nicely in the frame but I'm still undecided wether to raise it up slightly and tilt it back. The issue I had with the steering rack is hopefully now sorted, with thanks to Mikko I have an 11"...

Thanks for the advice guys. I'll use my angle grinder for the awkward cuts, I have been using a Rage Evolution 3 chop saw for everything else up till now, but it has a max cutting angle of 45. I like the look of those stationary disk sanders, I'll keep an eye out for one. I am rapidly running...

    Arachnid Build

I am just about to start cuttimg the A arms out and have been wondering how best to attack the 68 angles. I was going to do it by hand with a hacksaw, but I do have an angle grinder with cutting discs which may be better. I also have a bench mounted angle grinder very similar to r97's, but it...

We should get some T shirts printed :) I have a new rack sorted now thanks to Mikko which has really lifted my spirits. I'll break out the MIG tomorrow and get the main chassis finished and maybe start on the seat frame. Still not sure about my spindles, but I think I'll go with what I've got...

Nice drawing. I always thought the top brace for the shocks looks a little weak, I think a solid top piece would be better.

Yeah sorry about that Bill, just letting off a little steam. You guys have been great and offered some fantastic advice, I really appreciate the help. I'm going to stick with, I'll take this Arachnid for a drive if it kills me :)
