well without mods a vertical engine would not work. Thier for vertical should not be used for horizontal......................If You just buy a new 4hp vertical and horizontal rod, you can just exchange the bottom pieces.

But, a vertical shaft engine can be (easily) modified to work as a horizontal shaft, a rod cap cannot be modified to fit a different rod.

but i think the bottom of a vertical rod isn't grooved to fit the dipper. i would check to see if oyu could just use a 4hp horizontal rod.

The groove doesn't really matter that much. I'l check if its got the groove tomorrow. I'm not getting a new rod just for this engine, I'm not spending any money on it. Its much less stuffing around to get a dipper. The rod and crank might not match up anyway.

How hard could it be to fab up a dipper? I'm picturing a piece of 16ga sheet, a little cut, bend, and drill, double check for clearance, et voila! No?

Yep, basically what I'm thinking, I don't have any more sheet, going to see if the school in a nearby town has some I could use. (They will seriously just throw out a couple of square metres of the stuff because they have no use for it, most wasteful school in the world, not that I mind :D )

I have a metal dipper from a 5hp flatty. Maybe that will work? It'd only take two stamps to mail.

I live in Australia, you would probably need more than a couple of stamps to make it over here! Thanks anyway :cheers2:

Thanks

I've got a quick question about the oil. What if the engine already has a seperate oil dipper and such, can it be turned sideways without a hitch? I don't know much about how it works but I figure maybe just put a little more oil then the full mark so that everything is submerged when the engine is turned 90 degrees.

I'm trying the same maneuver with a push lawn mower, it also has a little self propelling part that comes out the side, could I take the reducer off of that and use it for the rear axle instead? The self propelling his horizontal when the engine is at vertical.

Yeah.... I found a good piece of steel today but I put it down somewhere and now I cant find it! Don't you hate it when that happens?? :mad2:

Its even worse when you walk around for 15 minutes looking for it and its in your hand the whole time.

You'l need to turn the carb 90 degrees to but I can see why it wouldn't work, is your engine an OHV Honda? I'm yet to see one that doesn't have a rod dipper. Getting oil to the head might be an issue though.

I think I know what you mean but I'm not really sure, would you be able to post a picture?

Yep, I've done that a few times!

Anyways, I found the piece of steel yesterday, I'l make a mock up today out of a coke can (just so I can make sure everything fits), hopefully I'l have the dipper made up by tomorrow, got to make a new sidecover gasket too.

Thanks

I'll post pics tomorrow maybe, I can't find my camera right now. Anyways, ignoring the horizontal shaft with the reducer could this engine be turned sideways?? Its a Sears Craftsman Eager-1 Model # 131 97850 if that helps.

I think I can turn the carb around ill just use some rubber piping(if thats alright??) and Ill extend the pipe to the gas tank and to the spark plug.

I'm still getting the frame of the go kart together but I want to know if this thing will work so I can have time to get another one. My physics project deadline is May 11:S

I think those mowers have a Briggs and Stratton engine (like what I'm using). If so (and it has the same inlet system as every other Briggs mower I've seen) then the carby can simply be turned 90 degrees and a simple metal bracket added to keep it there. Does you phone have a camera? Pictures would help alot.

Can anyone please tell me the torque specs for the rod bolts and the side cover bolts? My Model Type Code is 10908 0441-01 79073004. Thanks heaps if you can help!! I know its about 110" lbs on a 5hp briggs but these rods are quite different.

Also, I have some aluminium angle that is 1mm thick, do you think it could stand up to the job of being a rod dipper? I'm unsure but I usually way underestimate load bearing capacities of things.

Thanks

Well.... Made up a dipper out of the above mentioned ali angle, I had to make it quite short so it wouldn't hit the side of the block, to short for my liking. I would have to bend it to make it clear the side if I was to keep it longer but that would involve grinding away the strengthening "rib" which IMO would make it quite flimsy. I'l make a better one out of steel tomorrow, I'l post pictures of this ali one to show you what I mean too.

Thanks
