Does anyone know if the Honda GX's/ clones are clearance or interference engines? If the valves float, is there any tangible risk of them meeting the piston? I'm running a bone stock GX340, and he//, I'm not even hitting the governor at top speed, I need to gear down a few points. Once I've done that, I'm debating yanking the governor, but I really don't want to risk killing an expensive engine. I'm not worried at all about the flywheel grenading, (hey, Russ!), just don't want any internal collisions.

Take your rocker cover off, push the valve down as far as you can then turn your engine to TDC and do the same, if the valves stop at a different hight then they are hitting the piston, if they do then I wouldn't risk it. Valve springs are cheap insurance.

Yeah, true. I was just hoping somebody had a quick yes/no on the Hondas, as mine's stored for the winter. Digging it up and tearing it open just isn't going to happen right now...

i dont think you need to worry about it. Just back off when they start floating. Iv never heard of anybody having interference problems. Im no pro on hondas though

On the clone I pulled apart (GX160) there wasn't much clearance clearance between the valves and the piston, I'd say if it was reved high enough then they would bounce.

To me with the stock cam you can pretty well have the piston TDC and full lift and barely even get close.

Yes, but due to the momentum of the valves, when they are "floating" they usually open further than when not floating.

Valve springs are cheap insurance, if you worried about these things, get some.
