I believe your biggest challenge is going to be converting from horisontal shaft to vertical. The belt contraption above will work, but won't be without its own challenges. Hey if GM can do it you can also. even if it was 60 some years ago.
So your saying do that “belt contraption“ instead of a new axle and the horizontal shaft motor?

No. I thought you were using an axle with a vertical input shaft. Now yer talking something else? I'm purdy dense, I guess I didn't get that.
sorry if I was confusing, but I was originally asking if using a horizontal shaft motor like a 212 would work with the transmission Which is a vertical shaft. After reading your first comment and a little more research I realized it’s not worth it and I should just get a new axle and use a 212. Now I’m wondering if I should use a clutch on the motor and a sprocket on the axle or a torque converter on the motor and a sprocket on the axle or if there are any better options.

I can’t make up my mind. I want a manual transmission but I want a horizontal shaft motor like a 212. I know it’s possible but I don’t want to/can’t spend lots of money. Any cheap alternatives I could do like where could I get a cheap and lightweight transmission?

would one from an older atv work? I’m not sure exactly how they hook up together so I would need a little help figuring out what would work without too much modifications

My transaxle was free donated from an old ride'm mower. You would be surprised at how durable those are, but if you after big top speed this probably isn't the answer fro you.
You said yer 18, dump this s**t and start building that '70 Chevelle!

I deal with that exact “belt contraption“ regularly do not do it... Not even remotely worth it..

The factory that built it in 1966 gave up on it entirely and ran the later decks of a 90* gearbox5153FEB0-4EF1-4C64-A515-A4EAFD0026BF.jpegBB22E6EA-F8D5-45DB-9F94-05C4BB5A28B4.jpeg

If you really plan on trying to ride it to school and back on a daily basis, get yourself a mini bike. It's going to be illegal on public streets but no more so than a riding mower. It will also be a lot faster and a lot more dependable. You will also look a lot less stupid not being on a lawnmower. In reality 18 isn't that far into the future ( although at 15 it seems like it ) walk to school, work your a$$ off, and save your money so you can buy that Chevelle, or Mustang or Nova or whatever it is that fires your rocket. Go karts are kool, but as you transition into young adulthood your own ride is going to become pretty important.

Nice, I would have kept the car over her too. I’m just messing with you (I hope you understand). But it’s a nice car. And yes I have been trying to save up.
