Building a go kart for my three older boys. Mostly from some things we had around the house, I’m no fabricator or mechanic but figured it will at least be able to rip around the yard. Has gone through a few stages in its life, with the boys trying to decide what style they like. Looks kind of like a mix of a tractor, dragster, spaceship if you ask me. Ordering the axel and brake setup next week and will eventually put rack and pinion steering on it

Welcome to the forum. Looks like you're about a third of the way there. Is it all you or do you get the youngens to help.

Thanks! They come out and help/supervise most nights I work on it. One of them helped make a homemade pipe bender then other night so we could make some of the bends and they each like try and put their own spin on it.

You got to get them involved in the build to make memories. So that 40 years from now they can say “Remember that time dad cit off his thumb and had to get it sewed back on when we built that stupid go-kart?” Glad we still have it! You know good memories of doing stuff together!

Couldn’t agree with this more, and instantly brought a smile to my face 😂

I ordered the axel and brake setup from gopowersports tonight so pretty excited for that. I ordered the brake cable they have because I planned the motor a** backwards with the brake setup on the right instead of left, so might have to change that and go with a rod once I get the axel mounted and see what I’m working with.

There is a possible point of confusion here. Your Frankenstein kart and my Franken buggy. So on the advice of my attorney, the following disclaimer:
l cannot and will not be held responsible for any deragatory remarks, hate speech, death threats, or any other negative, ugly or harmful events that you might encounter, when my rolling scrap yard is mistaken for your kart. :ROFLMAO:

as you know nothing serious here!

Hey, remember the time when dad drove that Gokart we built together into the side of mom’s car and he had to go to the hospital! Yea, it had no brakes! Aaahh, good times. Yea, I’m glad we still have that kart for our kids.
A conversation your kids will have 20 years from now!

When I was a kid my neighbors built a kart out of scrap that didn’t even have a brake pedal just a piece of metal to rest your foot so you could pretend 😂 at least I kinda sorta have a plan 🤣🤣🤣

So I know this has been asked a million times but im a dope sometimes and can’t always understand it. I have it setup for 6:1 at the moment, would 13” tires work well for the back?

13" tires will work fine with that ratio. Are you going to use a converter, or just a centrifugal clutch?

Frankenstein kart/Not the original

ha ha! Love the edit! The patents and copyrights have expired, so you free to use the name, after paying royalties, of course.
I only wanted to warn you of the repercusions should your kart become confusd with my scrap pile.

what size engine? Gearing/tire size kinda go together with power and weight.

I have some 16” tires I could use but then I would have to regear? Just planning on using the centrifugal clutch at the moment. Might upgrade in the future but not enough funds with everything I want to do along with hopefully picking up a new kart chassis this weekend

If you are running a centrifugal clutch it will be easier on it with the 13's. Where will the kart be used? Maybe you already own the clutch. If not, a 30 series torque converter ( what you want to use with any 212cc engine ) is pretty reasonable, maybe even cheaper than a decent quality clutch, and a LOT more versatile.
