I just got an 8hp briggs that has 2 shafts sticking out of the side of the engine, I'm guessing 1 is the camshaft. Any way to make this work on a kart? can I just cut the one flush with the case?

Typical tiller (or snowblower) engine with a forward PTO (the main) and a reverse shaft (extended camshaft) for powered forward and reverse operation.

I'd sell it as they're somewhat rare and desired. Otherwise, get a standard cam and 'one-hole' sump cover and retrofit them to the block.

No idea. What's the condition? Does it run?

Do a search for sold/completed auctions on Fleabay for the same motor as yours to get a ballpark figure on value.

It's just a suggestion. Be a shame to butcher it (cut off the camshaft extension) as I can't think of any other modern/OHV engine with a secondary shaft like that Briggs.

I guess they use a more complicated transmission (which adds weight) to achieve the same goal.

You could also sell the cam and sidecover separately to cover your losses.

There was an auction for a 5 HP extended cam and sump cover on Ebay just recently. Perfect fit for those Troy-Bilt tillers...(of which I recently bought)....so there is a demand.

Those are kinda cool...

What is the second to last, big old briggs???

Yeah, I don't think I've ever seen that style of blower housing.
I know my 3 HP flathead has a similar offset starter, but the metal stampings I haven't seen before.
And I love flatheads with Flo-Jets. :D

Off hand, The year styling suggests itll be an early 50's, almost the same as my big #14...
With the oil bath air filter......
On mine its a big wad of what looks like horse hair.....and then the ring it it sits in...
Kinda like the modern foam lawnmower filters.. soaked in oil.
