Should i cut my losses and resell?

Well i bought an 83 RM 125D for $170, the seller assured me it ran, and lost its spark but will run fine again if i could get it to spark. Anyways i Bought a new CDI after some troubleshooting for $65, fixed my no spark problem. The engine had good compression so i tried starting her up, kicked it over quite a few times and figured the carb was gummed up so cleaned that out, kicked it over quite a few more times still nothing, i put a little pre-mix in the cyl and it kicked over, so i kept kicking it. All of a sudden it just seized, so i took off the side covers and got it unstuck with a socked, but it was still hard to turn over. Anyways i tore apart the engine and the connecting rod has a huge crack in it, and i found some metal shards in there. The cylinder and piston are fine, i havent checked the crank yet (dont have a flywheel puller for this engine). Anyways est. cost of a rebuild would be around 150-200, i already have 235 into this bike, is it worth it to rebuild? or should i cut my losses and try to resell the bike? The frame is in good shape, plastics are cracked up on one side and painted black.

LOL, a spark plug isn't gunna fix a cracked rod...i would fix it.

How much do you think it would be worth in good running but not so great cosmetic condition?

Did you buy it for a motor or a bike? If it was for the motor I would sell it, if you want a bike I would fix it.

I wanted the bike, i was hoping for a cheap beater...but its turning out to be not so cheap, but i guess $400 isn't all that bad for a good runner.

But it not running may have been the plug.

No it was a brand new plug and had a great spark. Either way it not running was a good thing, because if it started up and i rode it away chances are the rod would have let go and the whole thing would be ****ed right now.

Fixing it yourself is what it's all about, that's what we do. It may cost more to fix something than to buy a new one, but where is the fun and satisfaction of making something work that didn't if you buy new?

Plus its a two stroke with fairly plentiful parts

Much easier than your 250, but money is a problem for me, so im sure i'll struggle just as much.

To press the crank apart and put on the new rod and balance the crank should be around $100 just labor.

Doing it myself...or atleast trying, i'm not going to put that much into this bike. I got ripped off in the first place...The guy is completely ignoring my emails, really starting to piss me off.

I also found this, but i figured the chances of it having good rod bearings are pretty slim.

Doing big end rod hearings isn't that hard. If you have a press, V blocks, a dial indicator, and a couple of brass or lead hammers you are good to go. Press it together eyeballed and beat on it till you get 0 runout.

I dont have v blocks or a dial indicator, or brass/lead hammers but i can most likely barrow most of the stuff i need.

Well you guys did convince me for a while, but its just not worth it, ill lose more money than ill make resseling. I put it on craigslist for 225 already got someone whos interesting, ill be losing $10 which aint too bad.

On a side note, who here has seen nitro circus? i was just watching and its sad, they were beating the hell out of a brand new rm250...riding it over concrete barriers, Revvin the **** out of it...I mean if there gonna do that, they can have my bike and i'll take that new one off their hands..

nitro circus has got to be my fav show and i shed a few tears seeing those bikes abused, i guess thats just the way it is...
