Can't you buy a used rod somewhere? Ebay? I see bike parts all the time on ebay, though I've never really looked for any myself.

Maybe a complete junkyard engine for $100?

Its not the parts at this point, but the tools required to rebuild. I need a case splitter tool, i need to press apart the crank, and i need to buy a new flywheel puller, mines too big...I have seen complete bottom ends on ebay, which would work just fine but there in the $200 range w/shipping. If i could find myself an 81-83 rm engine with a bad top end for under 200 i would probably go for it.

If it werent for the $117 shipping i would definitely go for this one.
