Your little location rant is not gonna help you on this one. Reworking a bent axle ? A junk coil? A carb full of rust? No mods . Just trying to get a complete kart to run .

It worked for you cause of your actual location... Near Ohio close to BMI karts. Now that the OP has filled in his "location" I feel comfortable telling him check out BMIkarts.com Due to the proximity of WI to OH.

Do you see why it matters. I am in Texas so I but from GoPowerSports.com where I also recieve a 10%member discount code DIYGOKARTS.

Besides the rant I have given the OP 2 helpful links:thumbsup:

Wow boys?!
Now that the geographical location of my home is settled. Here's what I got so far; Use any of the websites that sell kart parts, no torque converter, use a simple 20/30 sprocket set up and my steering looks like a guys lawn mower.
Honestly I really appreciate the advise, and most of which I will use because I have never built a kart before.
So about the axle and hubs:
How do I know what hubs will fit the rims I currently have?
Is their a difference between the tapered end axle V.S. non ?
I'd like to get the rear end sorted so I can cut off the extra junk and start laying out the motor plate.
As for what is or isn't cheaper; a running kart or a frame like what I got, is completely up to the individual whom is building said kart. again I really appreciate the advise and the quick responses here. BTW my name is Curtis

Remove wheels and measure bolt pattern. Remove hubs and look at end of axle . You might be able to reuse the old hubs . I assume you are going to get a 1" live axle.

I'm concerned that with the combined weight of the kart and its occupants, a TC may be needed just to guarantee it will move and be optimal in all conditions. Lighter karts typically just use a clutch. What say ye men?

I was planning on a 1" because it seems to be the most common and could handle the abuse.
I agree this kart looks like they started with a frame and then kept gobbing iron on.
I will take the wheels off and measure. The guy told me his dad made this for him and used a Model A axle or something like it. There is a Diff. in there but I wasn't planning on using it. Not sure if it's tight anymore or even rebuild able.

True words, that was my concern. I will be cutting off any iron that wouldn't be necessary though too.

Good. I did not want to be the first to insult your project. But it definitely needs a Sawzall or cutting torch! lol

If there is nothing wrong with the differential, just keep it. You essentially have a live axle, but with easier turning. That would save you a large expense right off the bat. If you want to go ahead and replace it, measure the diameter of the current axle shafts. As long as it isn't an odd size, really all you need to order would be the axle itself, if bearings and such are in good repair. If things aren't welded to the axle you four reuse the brake rotor, the hubs, sprocket aND such. That would also save you some money on the project.

Just went back and looked at the pics and noticed the brake is on the jackshaft shaft...that is a pretty neat setup. You may want to keep the jackshaft, you could probably easily adapt it to use with a torque converter.

No. I do not like this kart at all. Sorry. I dont mean to sound like a Richard.

The Brake is on the jackshaft, so if you break a chain or it slips off, NO brakes.

There appears to be 100 pounds of junk welded to the rear end.

I do not like the steering. It is just so 1 off, you will never find parts. and if you figure it out you will be the only one. lol

I just think you could do alot better with spending money on a different kart altogether.

It just needs sooo much. There are a few parts you may be able to use on a different kart.

Sorry again, just my two cents. I usually try to be helpful, encouraging, and Funny.

Let's talk about the Elephant in the room; Yes this is a pile, no I am not scraping it. I agree this is not the best frame to start with. With that being said we enjoy the project. My boys are 8, 9, 12 and there will be many more projects to come.
I think a new axle is in order because if the chain snaps then no brakes. Also just by looking at this axle it looks like it weighs in at about 75 lbs. or more. I like the idea of a Diff. but we will play with that on the next one, also reverse.
Honestly even if I cut this down to the original frame it will be fun.

I say go for it. You've got it, it has wheels, get it rolling. I'd take it if you wanted me to have it.

I am still trying to figure out what they were planning on running into with that massive piece of square tubing!
Honestly, if you cut all the excess off, and cut the roll cage off, you would be quite a ways towards having a good pile of makings for another cart, or maybe a mini bike!
Do you know yet the diameter of the axle under the cart currently?
And I understand wanting to keep it! I have drug things home before thinking it would be a fun project for me and my daughter, only to find it really is just a hopeless case. It really breaks her little heart when we have to put a bullet in something and move on. I am like you now, it doesn't matter how hopeless it seems, if I tell her we are doing something, I just have to keep on with it.

Ignore the detractors. It's a project, that's all and it will be fun and a learning experience for all involved. Just keep the fire alive--I want to see you make progress.

Just tell them it's a beast and a tank.

What size shaft is that disc on and is it welded on the shaft .if it's 1" with a key way it will work on the new axle . Also your engine mount can be made out of the plate that is being used for the seat.
