Happy Monday,
I bought a Kart frame of CL mainly for a start. I want to put a live axle on and maybe stretch the frame. What I know at this point is that I need a 44" long axle. I am going to buy a Predator engine 13hp with electric start. Now what I don't know........how much time do you have?! I would like a simple kit for the axle with the right bearings, hubs, sprocket etc. Does that even exist? What to I get for the motor shaft side? What motor plate do I get or do I just make one? Let's start here because we have from the seat forward to do yet and I might get confused lol.

Thank you for your help!

If you haven't bought the engine yet, PowerLand on ebay is selling a 16hp electric start motor for 190$.

They also sell a electric start 6.5 hp for 140$. I would probably recommend the 6.5 hp because it is plenty powerful enough and some go-karts with the predator modded got nearly 60 mph.

Thank you everybody for replying to my post. I do have the skills to complete the task, but I have not done this before. I truly appreciate the help and guidance. Along with the rear axle any thoughts on a torque converter? Is it really necessary or can I just do a direct drive?

Depends on where you or the kids will be driving. Flat or hilly terrain?

We will be on mostly flat ground. We don't need any more speed at this point just a good running fun kart.

A torque converter will give more acceleration and hill climbing. If you are on flat ground, a 10 tooth clutch and 60 tooth drive sprocket on the axle with moderately sized tires (12-15 in) should get you about 20-30 mph.

A live axle is worse for turning, but it has much more traction in muddy or non asphalt terrain.

Another thing, the kart looks like a homemade monster! Is it as heavy as it looks? Thick walled square tubing, slightly overbuilt rear end, strange geared steering... Definitely looks solid.

The gearing and collection of pulleys and shafts looks confusing. Not conducive for a "drop in" engine placement. You don't have a shake 'n bake kart here--this is a project.

The steering looks nearly identical to my riding lawnmower's steering.

Yes it is as heavy as it looks lol. The entire rear end is way over complicated and is going to be removed. As will the mounting for a motor. I think a fresh start would be easier then trying to figure out what they once did. As for the steering, that's a mess to. When I am done with the drive shaft I will tackle that. Thank you for the tooth suggestion I will run with that. Should I use a 1" shaft and do I need or want it tapered down at the hub?

Axle depends on what hubs you plan on using. Also after buying axle and all the other stuff you need to get that thing running . It usually is cheaper to buy a running used cart . Only know this cause I just did it.

NO! Usually CHEAPER to buy a NON-RUNNING kart...(like I got for $20!)

What you want is one as complete as possible....(even it not in the best condition.)

"Running" is easy enough to solve.....missing parts get expensive!

If you say so but the receipts from my last two karts tell a diffrent story.

Whatever, nobody wants to fill out a profile location....just replace parts instead of reworking them....and spending stupid amounts of money on "modified" engines.

How can we compare apples and oranges?

Your little location rant is not gonna help you on this one. Reworking a bent axle ? A junk coil? A carb full of rust? No mods . Just trying to get a complete kart to run .

The point is.....he's trying to make one. With no kart market to compare to...or prices, availability, or shipping costs to consider.

Yeah...there's a reason I ask for locations when people start flapping gums without backup.....sorry....just the way it is....(can't have it both ways!)

Uh, this is not Eric87's thread. The OP has filled out his location info.
