Ok, so today we cut off the roll cage and started cutting off the engine mount and massive jack shaft section. What I found was kinda amazing. They took the angle iron drilled it out to the tube size and slid it on then welded it. Of course the years of changing the engine they welded on more and more plate iron for the new configuration.

The wheels were through bolted to the rims and the axle and Diff are multi pieces of this and that. I am going to cut that off as well. I will be getting new hubs and rear axle with break and sprocket. Any thoughts on pillow block bearings or the other ones that piece together??

I picked up the engine today as I said it is a 13 hp Predator motor from Harbor Freight. I will keep you updated as how it preforms once we are up and running.

What size chain do I need?

I like BMI website any cons to using them?

BMI is usually high on shipping, But you are close as they are in Ohio. I too like their Website/ Just shop around and check shipping. MFGsupply.com is in WI. they have 6.99 flat rate shipping All you can order 6.99. but they do not have the variety of BMI. and GoPowerSports in TX. They offer a 10% to forum members Coupon Code DIYGOKARTS.
May be a good lesson for the kids about online shopping.
You can use #35 or #40 Chain. Just make sure the clutch or Torque converter match the Axle sprocket and Chain.

I'm going to beat the photos drum. Photos, photos, photos!

People say BMI has expensive shipping but I just bought 3 items from them and the S&H came to $8.40 something. No other kart vendor seemed to have the exact same stuff either.

Ok so I looked up MFGsupply. They are about 40 mins from my house. LOL I am so going to drive there either tomorrow or Friday! I think I will call ahead and see if they have a store first but how unbelievable is it that they are so close!

I like MFG supply, It is way cool they are close to you!
You may have noticed they sell Lawnmower parts and snow machine parts....
So they are kinda general compared to say BMI.

I almost for got you asked. You can use either bearing type for the Axle. I have used both.

The kart looks great with that ugly roll cage removed! Easy now, this is the first time I've been critical of the kart. The cage looked too tall too.

What's the deal with the contraption on the front? Almost like a dashboard with a rectangular bumper added (or counterweight?)

Pillow block bearings are definitely more in the same flavor as this kart of yours--industrial style ruggedness. We thank you for the nice photos.

I think the "bumper" is a weight to keep the front end down. The last motor on it was a motorcycle engine.

A torque converter will give more acceleration and hill climbing. If you are on flat ground, a 10 tooth clutch and 60 tooth drive sprocket on the axle with moderately sized tires (12-15 in) should get you about 20-30 mph.

---------- Post added at 01:05 PM ---------- Previous post was at 01:03 PM ----------

A live axle is worse for turning, but it has much more traction in muddy or non asphalt terrain.

I have a ten tooth clutch 60t axle sprocket and I can hit 35 but that is revving above stock!!! And its not upgraded!!!!!!:mad: So I have to be careful:lolgoku:

Well, we went to MFG Supply today! I have to say that was pretty awesome! The folks there were great and they took us back into the stock room to look at parts! I got everything for and including a rear axle! I still need a clutch because they didn't have one for a 1" shaft but that's ok. Guys I have to tell you even if they were a little more money they are great folks! I didn't have to pay shipping and I spent over an hour with this guy setting up the rear end. They brought out parts for me to look at including a seat to try out. I know buying over the internet is hard to do because you don't have a person to talk to but I will say this is a family run business that truly cares.

Well hopefully I get to the set up phase this weekend!

Well that is very cool and an enviable situation. Sort of like meeting a celebrity--like "I've heard of you from the internet and now I'm really here." :D
From my own price checking, they are very competitive and cheaper on some things so I'm shocked they were a little more money as you say. However, I think the "little more money" was worth it since you had someone assisting you, access to the stock room and the advice too.

All they need now is a sticker for us go-karters. I got one from G.P.S. I can slap on my kart's tank so why not them? A little free advertising's not so bad...

I used MFG before, They do seem like great folks!
I asked them to join the Forum too, Like GPS has done. The guy joined but did not figure a good way to post here without looking like a total parts hore or something. Which again is still cool cause he had enough respect for this Forum to not try and turn it into free advertising!
MFG is good people!
Maybe if you go back you can discuss it in person. Cause regardless we like good people and good parts.

Ok guys, So I cut off all the drive train. I found the frame to be cracked and beyond repair. Total bummer. I will get some pics up for you later. So, I have decided to start from scratch. I bought tubing today and will head back to MSG for an engine mount, front end and such. I will keep up with the pics and questions as I continue on the adventure.

Bummer. You had such hop for that thing.

May I suggest a new build thread for the new project.
Also If you may be done by December, Why not enter it in the Build off Section!
