Gnarley. Totally cool idea.

I don't have any little #35 gears but I do have numerous Noram Clutch drives/drums I don't use. If one of these was introduced, they have needle/roller bearings pressed into them. The ID is larger than 5/8 but shouldn't be a problem. What's the ID of the wrist pin hole?

Shave off the drum portion leaving just the gear and it might be a bolt on solution, period!

Bonus. Bought... 2 of em. Thanks! We'll get this sucker goin. Now, for brakes. I'm not sticking with the vintage Airheart braking system seen on it, so if anyone wants to make a trade with me, I'll trade you my whole collection of Airheart brakes, model 150's for a bendix drum system seen in the pic below (including the spacer)... I'll give ya 2 or three calipers, pads (new) and 2 master cyls... the mounting bracket and the disc.... contact me if you're a vintage nut and can do it. The airheart braking systems aren't cheap so this is a deal.

Anyway, that was a great morning. Thanks guys for the input.

This weekend will see if we can't get the 6" elbow scoop mounted on the engine for the baroness and we'll see what Bonneville is needing. I'll just focus on those two this year & get them done... then it's off to the Salt Flats (or a really long smooth road) for Bonneville's test of the twin engine setup.

Anyone watching that may remember what we're doing there is: 2 Briggs Flatties, 2 chains, to clutches, two rear gears. Engine number one has an 18T up front and a 52T in the rear. Once engine 1 gets it up to about 45 ish...we wind up engine 2 and let off Engine 1... where it can take over with a 20T up front and a 37T in the rear... (yes, I"ll have a helmet on, thank you)

Of course, special wheels will be on this one and I have just the answer. Super Hard, super Skinny DURO race tires. Yea. We'll mounth the go pro lookin out the back right by a wheel for this one.

Please allow me to ask what's been done to the engines...
since mathematically 5hp will not be sufficient to even scratch the 50mph mark.
(49.25 mph assuming a maxweight of 240 lbs and 11" wheels)
11.5hp is what would be needed to crack the 60mph you're obviously targeting for...

Not that you cannot pull 12hp from a 5hp briggs...
but it should require more than an airfilter and a straight pipe I assume ;)

I see two engines inline rather than side by side in a previous post, perhaps it's getting a little aero work beyond your average kart :cheers2:

Although I do have to ask, if you're going for top speed why gear differently and run the engines separately? Two low ratio engines will likely do as well as one high ratio on the low end... and two low ratio engines will definitely do better than one low ratio engine on the top end... then you won't have to fiddle with running them separately either.

You're right Badot. I just like to goof off. Running both with the same very low gear would accomplish it for sure, and in the end, I probably will just run them with the same gearing... I'm just a goof off and like to try different things for the heck of it... such as this.

And yep, they're not your average karts. :)

it's Bonneville we're talking about, not the baroness ;)

aero-work will not help...
I calculated with a modern day race-kart bodykit... (0.6)
not an average yard-kart...

Oh, you mixed up low and high gear;
two low ratios will still be slow, two high ratios though will be fast and provide twice the power on slow speeds...

I understood what you meant, but novices might get confused by that..
you even got Kelly confused obviously ;)

easy to remember actually low gear/ low speed;
high gear/high speed..

do not get confused by the numbers...
it's actually a fraction..
1/6 (as in 6:1) is less than 1/3 (as in 3:1)

Anyways...

if you swap the clutches
(ie 20:52 for the low speed and 18:37 for the high speed engine)

and we assume 3600 rpm for the high speed engine,
the other engine will still be safe to be fully engaged (running barely over 4500 rpm to keep pace)
yes, not enough to hit 60mph I admit..

but the first engine might still provide that little extra you need.

Ratios don't flip around like that... I can't think of a good example, but here:

A:B = A/B. So 6:1 = 6/1

ratios flip around like that when it comes to determining if it's a higher or lower ratio...

here's the thing

6:1 is not identical to 1:6 of course,

but high and low ratios are determined by SPEED, and that means
with a 3600 rpm engine and a 6:1 ratio you get 600 wheel rpm
and as you can see that 1/6th of the original value (low)
with a 3:1 ratio you'll end up with 1200 wheel rpm, which is 1/3rd of the engine rpm... (high value)

ratios are generally expressed in TORQUE though.. (6:1 or 3:1)
since with that ratios you have either six or three times the engines torque at the wheels.

but 6:1 is still the lower ratio compared to 3:1 ;)
