How much are they paying for cans in your area? Its about .01 each here..... Takes a lot of cans to get any payback...

No...I'm using belts and v pulleys....one of which I made....most of this stuff is free...

I'm not sure....but it's somewhere in that neighborhood....

Takes about 33. 12oz. cans to make a pound....but I believe that a pound pays fifty cents....so it's a little more.....

You obviously have not read this full thread....or you would know have fast I can accumulate cans with minimal expenditure.....In fact...the small percentage of cans that are over 16 oz. is starting to become a real problem.....

All that being said.....I'm not planning on getting rich doing this....but in the short span of time...and the minimal effort I've put into this.....I've already got over 100 lbs. of cans....

BTW...I didn't get to work but 4 hours yesterday...but I found 2 perfectly good externally braced turbines....with bases....$100 any way you figure it.....a two slice toaster....a tool box full of electrical crap....including a working multi-meter....another tool box with a vacuum guage...a mini George Foreman grill....a torpedo level...a digital camera.....and a ton of other stuff I just didn't feel like messing with......

Cans are just the paycheck....until you hit paydirt.....

I'm afraid I'm not going to make any money on this anyway. ....I've only been to this scrapyard a couple of times. ...and I've never cashed in cans....

But I have a funny feeling. ....that I will be lucky to break even. ...because I also haven't bought anything there yet.....and I'm afraid I can find TOO many cool things in the yard.!!!!!!

Well....it almost happened....there was a Troy Built chipper shredder there....but....with all my willpower....I walked away....(with $38 in my pocket) ....

Didn't have 100 lbs. , only 74.....paid $44....Saw (13) 4' lengths of 3/8" allthread and couldn't walk away....-$6.....

Then I got home and started thinking about it....and even though my intention and NEED was to come home home with extra money.....I just couldn't stop thinking I should have grabbed that chipper shredder......

So I went back.....and it was GONE!!!!!

Oh well mission accomplished +$ !!! Checked odometer....14 mi. round trip...so even doing it twice.....+ $30....and found out cans pay 60 cents a pound.....so...almost 2 cents a piece..

Only in state's that don't have return law's. Michigan was the first back when I was a young'un, and set the bar at 10¢ a can or bottle. The bottler's and distributors fought it tooth and nail, and when anyone else has tried to enact laws they go to war.

It seems that asking them to take a less than 1/10 of 1% cost of production against several hundreds℅ of profit is just to onerous for them to bear.....

The part that's really hilarious for me is that Michigan enacted that law for the same reason Doug is drooling over potential profit. He can pick cans up almost anywhere. That= littering. That's why Michigan enacted the law. To help control/curb littering.

And it works.

I grew up before aluminum cans and plastic no deposit no return bottles.....IIRC....back inthe early 60's the deposit was 5 cents.....

But I don't pick up cans....no money in that....I retrieve them from high probability trash cans and dumpsters.....and I don't go out of my way to do it.....

With winter coming on....ummm...here...I won't be going to the lake....and I'll have to see if it's even worthwhile at my other spots......

Meanwhile.....I will see if I can line up some more people to save them for me.....

Yeah no deposits in WA either. Good on you for getting the cans back into recycling. If they paid more in WA I might save my beer cans. Been watching CL for a free trash compactor.

Well it's a joy to work in a large, clean, well organized shop.....too bad I don't have one....

The first couple of pics show where I was last time I messed with it...then there's a pic of the piston/ rod/flywheel assembly.....

It's probably usable as is .....except for the drive side pivot hole.....

The other side....I'm just going to replace the small spacer washer with the CD to help eliminate some of the wobble.....

I'll post up some pics of what I did today and describe it in another post......

Why don't you just clean up your workspace a bit. It is small so shouldn't take too long. Get all that stuff off the floor onto that empty shelf at the back i see

Because it is so small....I usually work outside....and then just chunk stuff anywhere inside for the night....there's stuff in there that doesn't even go in there when put up....

Now that it is getting cold and rainy...I'll have to stop and clean it up for inside working....

Soooo....in the first pic you see the parts to beef up the drive wheel pivot and the old set-up parts.....

So it had a 3/8" bolt with a 1/2" spacer..moving up to a 1/2" bolt with a 1/2"×5/8"×1 1/2" spacer... since I couldn't clamp this in my tiny drill press I made a block to center and square the hole and used the bushing and bolt to center the block...

In theory....this should have perfectly centered the hole....but in fact...it now has a touch of wheel hop......

No biggie....just something else to fix...

LOL!!!!! ......I suppose you are talking about this.....it's not a shelf...it's a fence for a router table.....and can't have anything on it for very long....or very heavy....or it will warp it......

And it's about 10" wide and 3' long....hardly enough room to hold all the crap on the floor......

Anyway.....I did clean up a bit......

And....while it was never large....10×12'....a look from the inside shows at one time.....it was clean and organized......

So I checked the runout on the drive wheel.....it's about an eight of an inch......so then I checked where it was.....

Now my thinking was....if the belt gets tighter in the crush zone....this could be a good thing.....or at least not too bad at all.....

Yep!!!!! Exactly backwards! !!!!.....I have an. Idea how to fix it......

Now....I know this sounds bad.....but remember.....I'm not working with precision equipment.....and this is a 13.5" pulley.....which means any deviation in centering the pivot....is multiplied over 12 times....so....It is what it is....and why I didn't want to make a perfect prototype......

EDIT: Make that WORRY about making a perfect prototype.....it would have been nice if it accidentally wound up that way.......

The nice thing about v-belts is the more you pull them the more they slide into the pulley and grab tighter, so you probably don't need to worry a whole lot about it.

Ok....I spent a little time today turning down the jackshaft's shaft to fit the new bushings.....a file, a drill, and sandpaper on each end....then the drill and belt sander for the middle.....

Next.....centering a drive pulley on the large jackshaft pulley....and fabbing a motor mount......

Then.....pretty much re-doing EVERYTHING.....

Ok......so I found a piston for the next phase of the crusher....I plan on doing a little cutting/welding on it....so I thought I would post this before I go out with a bang......
