So, how far into the wrong side are we going? Baseball bat and a Swiss Army knife? Or bring the shotguns and a couple of cases of ammo?
I agree with 'Sid that a half track could be interesting, but it wouldn't be a speed merchant. I've been doodling a bit on a tracked vehicle of some type using the rubber tracks off a compact excavator, and the biggest problems I've (so far) identified is that tracks are power hogs, and seriously limit any dreams of speed. I've seen some home-brewed chain types that seem to work OK, but they look pretty cumbersome to build, and most likely wouldn't pass your recycle/ re-purpose guidelines, Kelly....
If inspiration did strike, and you decided to build the coolest support vehicle at the track your daughter races at, I would recommend hooking up with Doc Sprocket and plan on using a lawn or garden tractor as the power unit/ front half (steering, engine, transmission/ trans-axle & brakes) with the cargo area over the tracks being the added part of the design.....
Just some ideas, but I guessing that they probably won't win because they really don't pass the KISS test....

a second "rear axle" and some cheating with caster wheels should make a nice tank tread.

Some great stuff there. Unit 51 is growing on me rapidly.
I kind of see a "roots of auto racing" thing developing. Bonneville Spirit being what it is, and a cool old cop car. If I had to continue with the theme, I'd be leaning towards something that calls up the spirit of an old bootlegger, real rumrunner-beginnings-of-NASCAR thing. I'm not yet sure where it would bloom into, but some kind of cool vintage seat-of-your-pants, genuine grease-monkey racing thing.

To any new folks tuning in, I'm Kelly. This thread is about something I do with spare and scavenged go kart parts that is a bit unique. By "a bit", I mean that it's nothing hugely special to me, I just have a knack for making usable crap out of what looks like, well, crap. They're go karts built from trashed go karts & mini bikes I round up... then given a little love and a new look using whatever I find that fits... and spend very little money on it. Very few new parts are used.
Some crappy welding here, some cutting there, clean up anything usable, fresh spray paint, a little of this & that... and a dash of artistic creativity... and you get what I call the Kart Rod. Then my metal collecting (scavenger) friend in the neighborhood gets what's left... It helps feed his family. How humanitarian of me.
A Kart Rod is a go kart built with the true hot rod building techniques of days gone by. It's not a dune buggy, it has no suspension and no roll bar. Yep, a plain old fashioned go kart. As dangerous as they get. Its wheels are 4 to 6 In standard fun kart wheels typically and most of the bolts don't match. The motors are 5 to 6.5 hp blocks, usually modified, and all of them go no less than 45 mph. They're street racers of a new breed... of an old breed.
... and each one cost around 2 to 300 bucks total when you add it up.
My dad was an actual greaser and taught me a little something about hot rods... meaning, son... you make do with what you have, and you make it work any way you can. Old rusty parts are still parts and if you over think it, it won't work. If you didn't bleed, you didn't do it right.
The only one that has to be happy with it is you.

As for recovery, well, maybe a "tow truck" rod or something. Our track has a "carnage cart" already.

What can I say, sometimes you just leave us speechless. You're a he// of an artist with great vision. I'm always looking at this thread but rarely comment because I don't want to just say stuff like "looks cool" or "thumbs up" and I hate to interject because it's hard to improve upon what you're doing. You're kind of out there in front which can get kind of lonely. Hope you keep hanging around.
I would love to get some of your Rods in Go-Kart Alley. I even talked to my Dad(truck Driver) over Thanksgiving about backhauling me some go-karts out of Utah but, he didn't think it would work...
I like the Hands wheels...a lot...why don't you give them to me? haha Nah, I'm finally happy with the wheels I made...finished pics to come soon.....

Here's some ideas that may not have surfaced here that I've kept over on my site. (being reworked now...)
For some ideas... (anyone can use my ideas, I don't mind)
Take the frame I used for Bonneville Spirit. It is a very common frame and can be found often. It's a manco frame.
See pics. (crappy mockups... but you gotta start somewhere)
1. Raw frame
2. With a MAILBOX, make a jalopy / hot rod lookin thing.
3. With ANY old junk pedal car, make a nifty roadster
4. Change that up... and make a nice low geared tow truck... perhaps Cooters Garage? Repo man? OH, how to put DUAL rear wheels?. HM>... &*(%)$#* YEA!

Well, I'm stuck.
I spent last night re-reading my entire saga while turning my forum into more of a personal blog type of thing... and in a post, I ran across where I'd named the cop car... and now I'm stuck.
Unit 51 is a great name... but I'd previously named it "Moving Violation"
What do y'all think? U-51 across the hood, and moving violation on the side?
I haven't decided whether to put a police star on it somewhere or not though.

My sister booked a band for her high school homecoming in 1987 called Moving Violation. I was like, "what kind of name is that?" they turned out to be bad a$$!
