This idea has been floating around my head for a while. I saw a homemade 'mud boat' on the internet and figured that idea can be adapted to a much smaller boat and make it go way faster. On normal mud boats they use a 20-30 hp engine, but the boats are bigger and made to carry multiple people and gear. They still go over 30 mph. If I put a 10hp engine or a little bigger in a smaller boat and carry only myself, I think I can get going pretty quick.

Here is a very detailed schematic of my idea based on hours of research and development:

I have access to a TIG welder so I think I am going to get a cheap, flat bottom, aluminum punt and chop it up and slap an engine on it. I have an 18 hp vertical shaft that I can probably modify to work for this.

And ideas? Input? Criticism? I like this idea. I think it will be interesting. If it works out I will probably build another so we can race.

scratch the boat idea...you should be an ARTIST! :surrender:

Yeah I have seen these boats on TV. Wouldn't it be easier with a horizontal? You coiuld basically just be extending the crankshaft and putting a prop on the end.

Yeah horizontal would be easier but I dont have a big one. I'm sure I can find one but why not start with what I have, you know?

Great concept; I'll be following it to see how it works out. One big potential problem, though. There are a lot of different grades of aluminum in use out there; the grades used most often for small boats and aircraft are extremely difficult to weld using common equipment. That's why they are riveted construction. A more detailed discussion on this topic (and a whole lot more) can be found at www.weldingtipsandtricks.com . As a loose, general rule, if the boat in question is riveted construction, it most likely can't be welded.

Hope this helps.:cheers2:

You could use automotive panel adhesive in conjunction with rivets, they use adhesive in place of some structural welds in most new cars, the joint is often stronger than welding.

I like these boats. Long tail racing is cool and very dangerous. They can be any thing and everything. People have big diesel V8 truck engines down to IL4 toyota car motors 2stroke motorcycle engines and even the honda clone 6.5 hp, except in most Asian countries they demand honda's.

here is a racing boat in the first pic

Second pic, not a racing but it the same idea..

Check this out, these guys are crazy. http://www.john-tom.com/Klong16/LongTail.html

here is another. similar not a racing boat though.

Here is a previous thread on boats w/content on the long tail.

some similar type of boats

good luck and stay safe..

Go on you tube and search
"Avon river power boats"

This is basically what u have drawn

They are a small group of enthusiasts that build and race these in Perth western Australia
There biggest event is the Avon river descent where kayaks and canoes also compete

It would be hard to find plans though as this is the only place in the world that use them

They are small power boats running 10hp out board motors
They are designed to run though rapids and in 100mm of water
They are designed off a surf board
Usually top out at 60kph
They have a hydraulic jack on the out board so they can change the engines height as they go

Edit
Oh they are carved out if a solid block of foam with a wooden spine and ally transum
Then covered in a mix of fibre glass, carbon fibre and Kevlar fibre
Makes them very very light

You could probably use a RAG with your engine you have...
reminds me of some boats they used when hunting gators... I think the show was called swamp people or something...

Thats it!

And making it out of foam and fiberglass is brilliant! I just so happen to know a man with a whole roll of fiberglass too! 6 feet wide and probably pretty long judging by the size of it.

Now I must come up with a small scale prototype.

This is right up my alley.. you can build a smaller hull and use a jet ski engine.. I've seen it done and it gets up and goes. here are a few picks of a bare hull with a few specs.

Not only that but these guys have now put together boats that run a GE T-58 turbines in them now.. capable of running 170mph on a river. Watch below to see a pov from a camera I mounted on one of them.

Not sure if a jet is what you had in mind by the pic that was drawn though.
