This is right up my alley.. Take a look at this little guy.. The guy made it with the engine and pump from a sea doo jet ski.

Not to mention some of the guys build extreme machines too. A pov from a 21 ft. aluminum hull being powered by a GE T-58 turbine.. Love the sound of this monster!

I've been planning for years to build a small boat for the pond here on my farm...... but I still haven't built the pond yet.

I was thinking of building a wooden boat about the size of a surf board, with a 5hp engine mounted in the middle (amidships as they say on the high seas) and a drive shaft running nearly horizontal but slightly slanted to the bottom of the stern. I don't want to go super fast because my pond is going to be only a couple of acres. I figure the trickiest parts would be getting the right propeller for the available power, and finding a waterproof bearing for the drive shaft to exit the stern.
