haha sorry i havnt had time to get back on. ok gotta reread some of this real quick. but what i can say is that i dont have that much money but i can save money up.

OP: Have you considered a 350 drop? They do make engine mount kits. The 350 is a greatly utilized engine with so many aftermarket parts at such low prices its a powerful choice.

how much is the 350 mount kits?

You can say this without knowing which model? Tranny? Gearing? Tire size?

tomorrow when im working on it ill take some pictures and try to find the tranny and ill also get you guys the tire size and stuff.

This is a poor suggestion and not even remotely a good idea.

so you saying just the 4bt cummins is a poor idea or all diesels are a bad idea?

Edit: wow forgot to put alot of stuff in the OP. so its a 1985 jeep cherokee laredo

another edit..... i just read that the 3.4/207 v6 engine is 160hp how is this under powered?

This is a poor suggestion and not even remotely a good idea. Please keep things relevant. That is almost as special as suggesting someone use a .50 cal for personal carry.

I'm not sure of this diesel engine but I just recently saw a jeep with a 4 cylinder diesel modified into it. The owner said he loved it. I liked it myself. Would definately get the best fuel mileage. On the 4cyl vs. 6 gasser. Put a 4.0 straight 6 in it and drive it forever. Great engine. It will only get you about 16mpg but it will be pretty snappy and run 300,000 miles.

Something small with a turbo would be good

The OP is on a project with little funding and this is his first time to do something of this nature.

To mount the engine old boy suggested would require cutting part of the back engine bay, custom fabbing the new bay and mounts, and somehow funding a new transmission at the same time.

Read about it here:

http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f8/official-cummins-4bt-swap-thread-cj-7s-537709/

Essentially there is little wrong with this if you have money, means, and willpower. However this isn't a great suggestion on a budget build.

Basically my argument boils down to mainstream bolt and go.

I do have access to a vortec 4.0 v6 if i had the ecm and the tranny that came from.the blazer to i would drop it in with the help of some metal fabers. But like you said would.need to source a new tranny not to mention ecm and wire harness.

a 5.3 vortec would be what you want the 4.0 may be good for road but off road your sell want more power id say try to stay way from v6 unless you want to put like 5:12 gearing in it

I skipped practically all of this thread after that little tiff but I will tell you we have an I6 4.0L in my dads '04 Wrangler, It's awesome probably one of the most reliable engines. However, some have experienced problems with the head casting cracking but we haven't had trouble and its got 130xxx miles on it.

If you want power and fuel economy try to get your hands on an eco boost V6, i'm not sure how it would drop in though...

Were putting an LS1 Camero engine in one of my auto tech teachers Datsun 280s though its going pretty good, just finished the transmission mount last week.

Thats good to hear brandon. I forgot my camera at home so gonna have to deal with cell phone pictures. I dont think i would be doing much off roading just yet. Just really need something that can get cross country. Then i will be doing some off roading.

Ill be taking some pictures today. I will try to locate the tranny id plate to get the model tranny.

A904
For standard-duty applications in smaller and lighter vehicles with 6-cylinder or small V8 engines, the compact A904 (later 30RH) was introduced in 1960. This transmission used a 10.75 in (27.3 cm) torque converter. There was also a smaller version of this transmission used in the Dodge Colt/Plymouth Champ cars made by Mitsubishi in Japan. This smaller transmission used a 10 in (25 cm) torque converter.
Uses:
1960-1976 170, 198, 225 Slant Six
1964-1969 273 LA-V8
1967-1978 318 LA-V8
1975-1978 360 2Bbl LA-V8
1972-c.1978 AMC I-6 "Torque-Command 6"
1994-1995 Jeep Wrangler with 4 cylinder engine.

not the best type of pictures. but they are some pictures.

got the head back on and the throttle body bolted on just need to get the rear throttle body bolt in. had to take the head off after getting it on because a stud broke and had to drill and tap.

i will get some full body pics later in the week.

when i get this running im going to look for another engine to drop in. might go to diesel.

anyone heard of converting a gasoline engine into a diesel? or would it be easier to just buy a diesel?

might just convert the engine to run on ethanol and run it till it completely breaks

or boat anchor they say you can put a regular 350 in what ever car that had one and they do great but the diesel was nothing but problem they cant hold up to the compression of a diesel plus a real diesel doesnt have glow plugs

If a real diesel doesnt have glow plugs what does it have?

After asking about the conversion i did some googleing and found out that it was a huge fail. The block would crack due to the high comepresion.

So any thoughts on an ethanol conversion?
