Alright so I was just starting my ride to go have a rain run (so **** excited first rain run of the season!) and I was cruising down the street to go the trails. I got bored so I decided to floor it till I got there. I slowly accelerated and right when I got to max I hear a very loud BAM!! It scared the **** outa me and then the kart lost power. I got out and looked at the back and this is what I saw...

WTF!
The bolt that was holding on the sprocket blew apart and the sprocket went flying 20 ft. Luckily I found it. I pushed the back of the pulley back in place, but I can just push it out of alignment easily. Now I have to get ANOTHER key and go get a bolt that will fit. Does anyone know why the part inside the jackshaft keeps sliding and why the sprocket broke off?

This is what it is suppose to look like..

Sprocket fits:

Sprocket doesn't fit cause the thing slid over:

Something must be out of alignment and causing the JS to be pulled laterally. Maybe try a longer JS with a locking collar against each bearing?

I think I'm just gonna buy a new bolt and stuff for it and see if it still moves. I just thought that was so weird for that to break and what a horrible time to do so!

See that your mount for the jackshaft is not bent. Those are fairly week and sometimes need an enforcing bar for structural support. Once you tap the pulley back into place the sprocket should line up for the drive wheel's sprocket.

How good is the condition of your clutch? When those die it is almost always more cost effective to switch those Carter karts over to chain on both sides of the jack-shaft.

My clutch is in pretty decent condition I always make sure it's clean and stuff stuff now so that should make it last longer. What kind of jackshaft should I get? The js on the kart is bolted onto a piece of metal above it.

It snapped the bolt.

Try a 10.9 high tensile bolt and locktite.

Ya I might try locktite but the thing just snapped.

Try a grade 8 bolt. They're about as strong as you can buy. It should have 6 little lines pointing in from each point on the bolt head.
