I use vavoline and napa premium on my engines and they are fine. 10w-30.

I also have some synthetic oil that I use for my old truck...hmm might try it in my briggs.

pretty much oil is oil, provided it is for engines. two stroke oil is separate though. brand and weight are subjective like everything else.

Not quite.
Why would the manual mislead you?
No small engine manufacturer recommends it (5w30) unless below freezing.
To disregard what engineers have determined to be best is a backwards step.
Should this just be dismissed? :

howza-bout some 85w-90? that'd work, right? its oil for gears, and there are gears in the engine! :smartass:
lol

well, Briggs recommends that synthetic 5w-30 or 10w-30 be used for any temperature range.

as far as conventional oils are concerned..
10w-30 will be fine to use. though straight 30 is recommended for 40*F (4*C) and above.
they only say the using 10w-30 in these temps will result in higher oil consumption, and tell you just to check the oil level more often.

this is from the Briggs service manual. so go ahead and use the 10w-30, just make sure you check the oil level more often.

i use whatever i find cheap, as long as its the right viscosity, and API service rating.
though i usually try to find a decently well known brand.

Briggs recommends an API service rating of SF, SG, SH, SJ. or higher. but just about any oil you can buy now is either SL or SM, both of which exceed the requirements of the ones recommended. (SM is the most recent and highest API rating) check the container for the API seals.
Affair_driven posted a nice pic of what they look like.

recently ive found that Walmart has oil fairly cheap in gallon or 5 quart size containers.
full synthetic is about $20 for a 5qt. container.
$11-13 for a 4 or 5qt. container of conventional.

well, if the engine has internal mods, idk what that does to what oil you should use lol
but for internally stock engine, stick with what the manufacturer tells ya. :)
