Did you ever wonder about directional adverbs used in phrases with no directional connotation? I need to cut up some firewood.... but why UP? Why not just cut it? Sometimes I pick out a tree, and cut it down, then cut it up.

What if you like to go out to dinner, and you like to wear your favorite jacket when you go out? If you wear your jacket out too many times, you'll wear it out.
Drive down the road.
Look up a number in the phone book.
Give up.
Give in.
Speed up.
Slow down.
Slow up.
Catch up.
If you're hiking with friends, you could get caught up in a bear trap, causing a delay. Then it would take a lot of work to get caught up with the group again.
These things sound pretty silly when you think about it.

Up north, down south, out east, out west. Kinda makes sense. Where it takes a dump is our maritime provinces. Everybody from Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Prince Edward Island would say "Down East". WTF?

No. The spelling of the words isn't what makes them rhyme, its the pronunciation. With orange and revenge, the A and E before the nge throws it off.
