winch motor

ive got a pedal childs kart (my 2 year old sons) and i want to turn it into electric just for fun not speed ive got a winch in the shed and wondered if i could use that

Too many windings, it's made for torque. You COULD, but probably wouldn't be very effective. Buy yourself a nice 500W or so scooter motor.

yeah i thought that but im trying to build it from things a can get for free or very very cheap as its not sumthin special just a little mad quick fun project i was also thinking washing machine motor or even a hedge trimmer engine making a small petrol one

bare in mind my son is only 2 years old so dont want to much speed

Washing machine motors are probably AC.

what does ac mean is it that i cant use ac with car battery?

ive made a few things with petrol engines never used electric motors so its all new to me

AC= alternating current can change flow of current direction (electricity flow)
DC= direct current flows in one direction.

had a bright idea not sure if it wud work but here goes. if i use a alternator from a car could i use it to power the kart and charge the battery at the same time i know a second wheel/sprocket wud have to be fitted.. any ideas on this

Eh... it wouldn't charge the battery at the same time it's running lol... unless you do regen braking.

Try some car windshield wipers motor (better of the truck - 24 V). Or some battery operated tools (drill)- those are used for small kids battery car (with some gearing).

Golf kart motor is on a heavy side (besides power). Your kid should be able to stop it and you should be able to catch him , if he floors it. Just for understanding how it performs (battery tool for drive), you can watch this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y8abvlYHK3Q
Now , imagine golf kart motor , which is X times more powerful, with practically no weight at all to push ...
BTW , it doesn't have to be expensive , professional, power tool. One from home depot will suffice.

Dead scooters are easy to come by, the brushes wear out fast. You should be able to find a whole scooter without too much trouble. Post a wanted ad on CL

No you dont have to use a controller if you dont want to. This is my electric scooter I made, Uses a ford style starter solenoid. Full go or nothing. Way less wasted energy with the solenoid but no variable, But even if I had a controller I'd be WOT all the time anyway

ok guys change of plans had a small petrol engine gave to me today so that is goin on it will post a few pics soon to show u how its goin lol bring on the build lmao
