Which engine?

Just picked up another go kart this weekend for my son. It’s a Rattler II and came with the original Briggs Powersport engine. This one has a roll cage, which was a must.

I plan on swapping the motor to a HF. Just did the 212cc on my first cart and it’s great. Was thinking about going smaller with the 79cc engine. Price is the same but was thinking maybe something not as powerful since they are little. Thoughts?

Is the 5 HP too fast? Does it work?

You could also gear it down for less top speed, which will both keep your boy safer and help keep the clutch going longer.

The existing one has carb issues and I’d rather put something more reliable. Current one only runs briefly with starter fluid. I took off the carb and it was nasty and broken. So I can spend $30 and maybe get it working or swap for $99.

I need to get a clutch. The rear sprocket on this is 80tooth #35. What tooth count should I go for on clutch to keep my ratio good and knowing I don’t want to increase speed at all.

Stick the baby predator on it, it will have less power than a 212 for sure, but definitely enough to push two kids around. We had a 4hp Robin Subaru engine on our two seater, crammed me and both my kids in it and it pulled all of us with no issue.
