And I'm afraid you really should get a fuel pump and remove the tank from the engine..
moving it back and down.
it's just a tall big block of black up front.. looks a tad awkward I think...

and since you can shave those 4" off the height it'd certainly help..

getting rid of the box muffler would be nice as well (side pipe anyone?)
and an intake scoop (giggle)

few loose ends.. a hole lot of sheet banging metal work ahead I say

Well, Allracing seems to know how to properly gear for performance. Rather b weldings approach to fixing performance is buying and mounting a bigger engine.

I do agree with everything! The original drawing in the first post has no tank on top of the engine, a tub, a fat scoop and a side pipe

I might go after all that eventually, but thinking that it would be nice if it was driveable during those upgrades. That means getting to a successful test drive, blowing it all apart for final welding (alot is tack welded only at this point), painting it and getting it back together

Talking about it, I could really use some advise on how to go about a fuel pump...what to use and how to wire it?

And would anyone have a suggestion for a muffler?

A mikuni style pulse pump is what I'd go for.
three tubes, no wires at all..
really straight forward two clearly labelled in and out fuel lines
and one (mostly centered)
for the vacuum signal of the engine (can be taken from the head cover or the crankcase)

driveable and tack welds?
IDK man..
let's say it this way..
if I were the kid to be allowed for a testdrive..
I'd be up before you every single day to drive around and keep you from disassembling it until it breaks

As long as it doesn't move under it's own power you might have juuust a little less
"we there yet?"... "can I.."... "how 'bout tomorrow".... "daaaaaad?"

And having it apart for welding in order to make the testdrive a bit safer
is the ideal opportunity to have it painted already, no?
once painted you'll be reluctant to move the tank I guess (welding in a tank mount)


since you have a good amount of length,
a long pipe muffler would look nice ..
not too large in diameter for any size motorcycle (above 200cc that is) should work well

I removed the friction discs from the throttle, made a cable bracket and installed the throttle cable. I also added adjustable pedal stops to both pedals (to limit backwards travel) + a throttle stop. Still running on the governor. I set the throttle max to around 2/3 travel. I totally forgot to take any pics as my son and I was to eager to get to the test drive.....I had made promises

Anyway, the kart did drive:

There wasn't any big adjustments to be made other that tightening up the steering av bit. And set the throttle travel to 100% according to my son

Going forward I will be looking into:
- Nicer seat
- Some sort of body, back to the wheelbarrow tub or something else
- Lights
- Kill switch
- Remote tank
- Cooler muffler
- Finish welding
- Paint

Still alot of work

I'd probably go with a spun Aluminum fuel tank like shown. For exhaust, could try to find a boat size steel fire extinguisher, gut it out and make your own Cherrybomb glasspack for it. Nothing screams classic streetrod/rat rod than cherrybomb mufflers. Or small 2lb portable propane bottles work, but you'll need a long shrader valve removal tool to empty any remaining lp gas from it, otherwise you may lose an eyebrow or hand.

Yeah, Doc Sprocket made a fire extinguisher CO2 cartridge-based Cherry Bomb "Glass Pack" for a GX340. It actually muffled at low speeds, and made a real nice BRAAAPP when he revved it. I've wanted to make one myself for some time.......

If you want to kinda of keep the cost down for fuel tanks, and maybe aren't a fan of brand new shiny things on it, try looking on Ebay.
I found a perfect-fitting, perfect looking, perfect sized round fuel tank for my go kart for about $50. It was an old Clinton tank. Built in fuel filter. And the strap mounting system fit an existing bracket on my go kart with only a little bit of modification!

Look around, you'd be surprised what you can find.

This is a good observation. There are 3 problems that needs addressing here:

- The wheels are loose on the spindle. These (chinese) wheels came with 2 ball bearings but no spacer in between. This means I couldn't really tighten them at all. This made for play between spiindle and wheel and wheel bearings spinning on the spindle. The bearings are so bad quality they are even blown after the test drive. I have purchased new bearings and am in the process of making spacers

- There is serious play between the steering box and the side steer shaft. Im gonna need to weld up the shaft and remachine

- The 'box could probably do with some adjustment

I do like the idea of a round tank, could look real good given the old school look i've chosen

On the subject of muffling I need the kart to be quiet (unfortunately), stock like now will fly but quieter would be even better. Nabors you know. Actually, every now and then I would like it to be loud like when we take it to a car meet and stuff.....hmm maybe I need to make some sort of muffler bypass valve

Sorry, I don't know with the whole "neighbors" thing. My neighbors aren't irritated about my loud, fast kart! If anything, they like it! So no I don't really know.
I would also like to play around with an exhaust valve, but the tuning would be an issue. You'd have to richen it when you bypass the muffler.
