I don't see the images (google usercontent blocked ... just for me?)

'sid

Nope. I don't see them either.

I don't see them either

Oh good, I thought it was just me...

I have changed the picture host from Google to Tapatalk, hopefully it takes care of the problem :idea2: Please let me know if you can see the pics now :)

You could simply upload them to the forum...

Still working on the "Ford I-beam" front axle

I cut it to length by drilling it with large (5/8") drill bit, cutting it with a hacksaw and finally machining the ends with a 1" end mill. Prior to drilling it I set the axle level relative to the table of my trusted Bridgeport milling machine. I then tilted the head of the milling machine 7degrees, which is the king pin inclination on some 30ies Ford axles:

I didn't take any pics of the drilling/cutting milling process but here's the result:

I turned som bushes for the ends, through which the king pins will fit. These are 25mm (~1") OD, ID will be bored later to provide an interference fit for 12mm (~1/2") king pins. Length is 35mm (1 3/8"). Measurements were based on looks more than anything

Tacked the bushes onto the axle:

Welded solid:

Not the prettiest of welds but I believe penetration was good here. And the visual result will be hidden by the spindels to a degree

Almost done with the front axle!

Really? Didn't see that option but then again I am no pewter geek :)

Have a look at this post from Bob

I PM'd you, but since it might help other people too.

It looks more complicated than it is.

Last piece of the I-beam puzzle .

I clamped the axle to the mill table and went to town with a 8mm (5/16’’) drill bit:

Finished axle:

Next up is hanging the I-beam axle. This is done in a few ways on real hot rods, one of which is by a transverse leaf spring and a set of split wishbones. Something like this:

I have a leaf spring that may be suited for my use but more on that later. The focus right now is the split wishbones. I found this picture online and I will try to make something similar:

I started out with a some 25mm (~1”) tubing with 1.5mm (~1/16”) wall thickness. Flimsy stuff, but the ‘bones will only take axial forces so should be fine. I also needed the tubing to not be too strong as it was my intention to squeeze it flat 😎 :

I made 2 pieces like that and afterwords split them and removed a wedge from each piece. The idea here was to end up with a coned shape with and oval end and a round end:

One end:

The other end:

Excuse me I need to vacuum up the drool off my floor lol. This looking awesome. What weight leaf spring you going to use? I'm concerned that it might be a bit much and not off much suspension. Hopefully I'm dead wrong.

Did he say he needed suspension? Some of us live where roads are flat.:idea2:

That is a good point and one of my concerns also. The leaf pack that I have is a helper spring from a pick up truck. I.e. close to the right length but way heavy :) I plan to lighten it by splitting the pack and using only one leaf. If it is too heavy still I plan to shave width off of the leaf to lighten it further.

Might I suggest finding a light trailer leaf spring and dropping down to a single leaf on that?

I would use a Club Car golf cart front spring, I will not only get you in the ballpark but onto the playing field.

VW bugs use much smaller leaf springs; I'm talking 3mm (1/8") thick & from 20-30mm (~3/4-1 1/4") wide... just saying...

These are great recommendations, thank you :cheers2:

Good advise should always be valued highly IMO and I will be looking at spring alternatives

Put some more work into the ‘bones . Turned some bushings for the frame end:

Drilled the ‘bones for a plug weld:

Welded the plug and seam:

Tacked the rest:

Welded solid:

And ground smooth:

I used my MIG welder for this even though I am in the game of building TIG skills. The reason being that the wishbone halves didn’t end up with a perfect fit. It is much easier to bridge a gap with MIG than with TIG (at least at my skill level :p)
