If you want it more stable just extend it the wider and shorter it is the less stable it will be.. go with longer and the axle behind the engine.

Is this an offroad kart? If not, you might wanna look at lowering the center of gravity rather than widening the rear axle, especially if you aren't moving the frame and bearings out to match. What freakboy is talking about is extending the wheelbase rather than widening the track width, it will be more stable at high speeds with a longer wheelbase, but unless you change the ride height and/or center of gravity, it will still tip just as easily. If it's a pavement or dirt kart, put some shorter tires on it with some good race wheels and hubs and it'll be much less likely to roll over. Post up some pics of this beast and you probably get some much more useful and specific feedback, ;)

Now that I've seen it, I can say for sure, your CG is way too high to be stable in turns, a wider axle may be about the only thing you can do for that, aside from lowering the motor in the frame as much as possible. I think I would probably stretch it a bit, DEFINITELY widen it, frame, axle and all, lower the motor as much as possible, and IMHO, if you use anything less than a 1.25" axle, you'll be flirting with failure every time you take it out. ;)

Two more cents- Go ahead and widen the whole affair, but do the whole thing and move the bearings out further, too. If your kart's gonna see any kind of abuse (and really, whose doesn't?), you're going to place alot of undue stress on the outer ends of the axle, leading toward bending/breakage. To get the most out of your axle, you want the bearings as close to the wheelhubs as possible. Think leverage.
Cheers- Chris
