I use a 1" ID seamless tube between the pillow block bearing and wheel hub as a spacer. The end of my axle is tapped for a 3/8" NC bolt.

The key runs the entire length of the wheel hub. One end of the key is against the wheel spacer edge and the other end is against the big fender washer on the axle end bolt. Of course I cut it just a tad shorter then the hub so we wouldn't any jamming issues when tightening the bolt down. Wheel spacers are a nice clean, safe way to retain a hub to the axle. I used to use lock collars but that was pretty iffy.

Spacers are, in my opinion, the best way to go. There clean, easily adjusted, unlike locking collars they don't dig into the axle, and they cant come loose.

Why would you need such a long axle???? You can get extended hubs, wheels with less backspacing, etc., that's why they don't make longer axles. What type axle are you trying to extend? What kind of wheels and hubs?

I'm sure it's the same with karts as it is cars.. when you run a very aggressive backspacing it wears out your wheel bearings

It's not the same with karts though, and the bearing position doesn't change, unless he's building the frame wider and moving the bearings out also. ;)

cause i would like it to be a little more stable at speed. ive had it up on two wheels a couple times and thats no fun at speed. solid hardened axle. 8" regular steel wheels, same hub as the one pictured above
