whats the recommended engine location referenced to the drive wheel?

So in another post I have a picture of my setup with the electric motor motor really far back on the kart. I had issues with throwing the chain (and per recommendation) I moved it a little closer which has helped.
my current mounting system is very temporary, thus also causing the motor to shift a little while riding and throwing the chain.
I am ready to weld a more permanent solution now but want to put it in the best location.

So what do you guys recommend? keep it behind the drive wheel (and as close as possible) or should I modify the frame/chassis and mount it directly over the drive wheel?
pros/cons?

If you can put it as close to the drive wheel but INFRONT of it, that way you have the mass of the motor between the axles.
I know it's not much, but every little thing counts, right ;)

If you can't put it in front of the rear axle, then behind (just where it is) not above, since you also want all the weight to be as low as possible.
(Again, every little thing ;))

makes sense, but I dont think the weight of the motor is going to make much of a difference when Im pushing 200lbs :)
but I understand where your going...

for the mount, Im thinking of getting an extra wide channel, possibly 6" wide 12" long with 1-2" lips. then cut half circle notches in the lips where is meets the frame and weld it all down, then basically have slots cut into it for mounting/adjusting the motor

that sound about right?

Frankly, neither do I ;)
But again, even if it doesn't make much of a difference you can still treat it like if it would :D

If I understand you right, it would work, but may I ask why you don't just weld a plain sheet onto your frame as a mounting plate;
I'm sure I missed the reason for having the notched 'lips'.

or am I going overkill :)

you think just a solid 1/8th or 3/16th thick plate would be rigid enough?

trying to picture how I would weld it to the tubular frame? only points of contact that seem weld-able are on the topside where each tube goes under the plate...

I'd think 1/8 would be sufficient without further support, 3/16 for sure yes.

I think that's whats on most std karts (with much heavier clone engines)

On the other hand, there is nothing wrong with adding more stability to the mount if you want, those few ounces of steel wouldn't actually be noticeable when it comes to total weight ;)
