he never said that a stock clone and briggs could each hit 5k, the briggs would be ok as long at it was not continuous for more that a min. The clones have been know to have flywheel fly apart and or have connecting rod break. With overhead valves it they float the will hit piston. I like the old briggs because they are simple and last a longggg time. plus you can get them for cheap. like 40 bucks if your good like me ;)

I don't disagree at all! I have a 59' Briggs 2HP... Still alive and running strong!

But the Honda and Clones can go up to 5300RPM before the valves float...

Just because the Honda wasn't producing GX's in the 50's doesn't mean that it can't last that long... Sheesh...

I think we should have a little contest if any one is up for it and close enough to each other .One person build a a clone 6.5 and the other build a 6.5 b&s or 5 h.p. and lets just see which one would have the best power and which could be build with the least amount of money.

I'm talking about the flatheads are very proven engines over ohv that has only been around for a few years.

thats easy, briggs would win. the Raptor, and the animal own all for karts. period.
For the price of those two types i guess so.But i would just like to see someone build there own b&s and some one build a clone there self and do what ever you wanted to them with a money limit and see what motor would do what and last.
Thats just my 2 cents i think would settle every thing.

:idea2:

the bs would last longer in that case. period. the things that need upgrading on the clone isnt always needed on the bs and etc.

You can port & polish the intake and exhaust port if you have a dremel ,just take off the head, take out valves, and grind away casting and polish smooth.Make sure you do something so you don't get metal shavings in the cyl. etc..Get a high flow air filter, an exhaust pipe, disconnect gov,and get a high rpm rated flywheel. And if you have enough money left get about a 26mm Mikuni Roundslide(or flatslide, better perf., but more expensive) Carb and adapter for it it will increase power.I put Mikuni's on everything and they have yet to disappoint me.

Exactly, which is why you can't judge them yet

Thanks

Excuse me? 1) You probably don't own one 2) Tell me which you see trashed more, a Briggs & Stratton, or a Honda/Clone. Personally I've never seen a Clone on dumpster day.

Who said i judged them? All i said is that they are made with cheaper parts(which is true).

And, 1) B&S engines have been around alot longer, and most people dont know the first thing about fixing engines,so they throw them away,Briggs are alot more common engines. 2) Not as many people buy these clones so they dont have a chance to throw them away :p :biggrin5:

i hear all you all and your ideas are great but what is castings? is that carbon buildup? and polish the head with what substance? i have a dremel tool but do i just grind away? an how did everyone take there governor off? did you just beat it off the crankcase? what? an how do i increase the compression on my engine? but a new head gasket and some sealant? please help. thanks

Let's just say carbon buildup is bad :)

Let the Honda/Clones prove itself before you judge them.

Casting is the left over metal from when the block was "cast" formed (metal melted and put into mold) You will know what im talking about if you open it up.Dont polish the head, polish the intake port just with a bit for the dremel that is smooth. To increase compression, you must take it to a machine shop and have the head "shaved" which brings the head closer to the piston which makes for more compression. You may have to run higher octane gas if you do this.

Engine replacement

I had just got this http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/Category.taf?categoryid=582&pricetype=S&categoryname=Gas%20Engines for my sons go kart.We looked at lots of options. They are expensive new. I plan on doing some of the upgrades on this motor as time goes on.

For the price You can't beat it!! The kart is going through changes but we had to start it when we got home(the boy is 12 and could not wait in tell the kart is done) gas and oil put the choke on 2 pulls and it fired sounds great.

Another things Honda's and Clones excel at. All their engines n' stuff, GX110 to GX200 (then the larger section) have basically the same head mounts. The oil ports might not line up... so you might need to think about that.

Increasing the compression on Hondas and Clones are easy. Many sites offer flat top pistons over the dished pistons. Also, you can install a GX160 head. Everything works perfectly. Stock GX200 heads are around 22cc. GX160 heads can have as low as 14cc.

Too much compression? Get a thicker head gasket... Too hard to start? Compression release...
