what would cause my engine to be tight

I had an issue when riding and the engine quit and seemed to be very hard to pull on the starter. I dissasembled the entire engine and found nothing out of sorts. I put everything back together along with some dual valve springs and its still very hard to turn. Ive been through the whole engine and I dont really know what to look for. The big end on the rod looked ok with no scratches same with the crank and the piston fit nicely back into the bore. some help would be appreciated. oh this is a flathead briggs

Could be bad crank bearings?

umm. yeah. so there where no bearings anywhere on the engine so i assumed it was like bushings? there wasnt any play though to speak of.

Forgot they used bushings haha, ok then i have no clue...could your crankshaft be bent a little? try turning it when the piston is out of the cylinder and see if its still hard.

Has your coil jammed on to the flywheel?

Make sure rewind starter ratchet is spinning freely in counterclockwise direction. Crankcase gasket may be too thin. Check for end play.

Is it hard to pull with the spark plug out?

Check Crankshaft end play/for binding.

I used silicone for a gasket so maby thats its. I loosened all the bolts though and it didnt seem to get better but I didnt wedge it off yet. Ill look tomarrow at it. thanks

Alot of these suggestions are great but I have nothing hooked up on the motor except the internals put in and the sidecover on. No head or carb or flywheel or mag.

Gaskets must be used. In the gasket set,there are at least 3 thicknessess that can be used according to how much end play there is to begin with.
This is the first place to look and eliminate.

I took the sidecover off and it turned quite freely. I think the crank and or cam is bent and it causes it to bind when they go into there slots on the cover. I took it off just a little and it was still really hard to turn but once it was completely off it turned just fine.

I was going full bore down a hill when it started to die then shut off. I then tried starting it again and it was a very hard pull. What would cause it to bend before other things? I would figure the rod or the valves would bend before a crank would.

could it be that it was overheated and it created temp differences and cause some pparts tyo expand and shrink and make it not fit blah blah blah?

or maybe your engine is like that move "the curious case of some guy" and your engine ages backwards and its going into break in period instead of loosening up
