What crankshaft type?

Anybody know or suspect what kind of crank pto this sort of Briggs generator has? Keyed, tapered, etc? Wondering if it's worth the effort and the money. I like the idea of a generator engine more than a tiller or other because chances are better it hasn't seen a lot of hard use. Thanks in advance for any comment.

Alternatively, how hard is it to find and fit a different crank? More trouble than it's worth? Of course, I understand most folks prefer the OHV engines, but I am partial to Briggs flatheads...

Well, that spec plate i posted is actually from a similar generator I already have sitting in the garage. The one that's for sale on c-list looks much cleaner. And who can resist a reasonably priced and clean vintage flathead?

I am partial to flatheads too. EDIT: that is a pretty green color (for a guy that is bored with black engines).

Alternatively, how hard is it to find and fit a different crank?

They are all over that famous auction site and elsewhere, may even cannibalize a flatty for a crankshaft and other parts if you find one on Failbook Moronplace or Craigslist or Offerup.

I'm a big fan of old Briggs Flatheads as well. But, that is all we had growing up along with the Tecumseh of coarse.

The straight crankshaft should be easy to find and just as easy to swap out. If the price is right for you, go for it.

If you get it, tell us what the engine code on the blower shroud says. I have no idea what a tapered crank looks like in the code or if there is a code for it.

Does it still generate? It may be worth more as a generator. Those had the copper windings still compared to the cheap aluminum windings of today’s junk that burns out.

Rather than fire up the neighbors so late at night, I want to see the cylinder beforehand. A couple of the head bolts seem to have lost some factory paint, too. So I don't know if it's been opened already. I'll get into it tomorrow, I think. Still, it's a score because it's so much like the other green 5hp I picked up last year. So not to confuse, but here are both. (Last year's find is the dustier of the two.)

I'll post more about model numbers when I have a closer look but it already looks like they were manufactured at the same plant just about 3 years apart.

Well, I meant the code that is stamped, rather indelibly, onto the blower shroud by Briggs, not Coleman. 🤭

On a side note, it always bothered me that if you replace the blower shroud/recoil assembly on a Briggs flatty, you lose all the engine info. It should be engraved into the block but I digress.
