What can you tell me about this go-kart??

Hey everybody, I'm new to these forums. I just recently picked up a go-kart to have some fun instead of my Scooby. The only problem is it doesn't run, my guess is something with the pull start. There is slack and it wont retract.

Can anybody tell me what engine this is or possible what is wrong.

I purchased it from a local car forum for pretty cheap and the person said it was running good. Stopped using it a few years ago and then a firned wanted to use it and it wouldnt start. It sounds like it wants to, doesn't growl loud but I can hear something trying to start.

If you know anything that could help me I would appreciate it, I am going to school for automotive this fall so I'm just trying to some experience with motors. I also snapped a few pictures for to help.

I have stupid noob questions such as what does the red thing do, is it the primer? Also what is the thing on the back that is silver, would that be the oil?

take those 3 screws out and take the pull starter off, see if the rope is on the pulley inside. It might have jammed or something. If it has and u got no idea how to fix it, take it to a motorbike shop and they will help u out.

EDIT: That lil red thing looks like a clutch arm thats snapped, i could be wrong but i think that N stands for neutral. Also is that silver thing connected to the carby? It could be a weird air filter. Its not oil as if u look at pic three, that little thing in the middle of the screen, top left to that black thing is your oil. Take that out and u can put in oil. Im not sure if this has separate crankcase and gearbox oil but it doesnt look like it. Just take that thing out and check the thickness of the oil, if its thick its crankcase oil, if its thin its gearbox oil.

I took the pulley apart, the springs dont look how they are suppposed and I'm missing one of them. However I used an electric drill to try it out but it still doenst seem to be starting. I found the oil and it said 10w40 and but I used some 10w30 not to fillit up but just enough so it would be able to start hopefully. Still no idea whats wrong since I have zero experience, hopefully my father will take a look at it for me.

That lil red thing is a gear indicator. It suppose to help you know what gear u are in. Hope that helps some

You might have to have the engine in neutral before it will start.

also another thing, dont u think that kart is really skinny? It looks real thin, might wanna be careful goin round corners so it doesnt flip.

I'm planning on using the neighbors tig welder and fix the cage, and make it better.

Could anybody possibly direct me where I can learn about these motors and how to clean them, haha. Thanks guys!

I agree, Its a gear indicator. The clutch is not on the recoil side of a motor.

Prolly a 3-wheeler motor. Should get up and go pretty good once you get it going. A m/c shop should recognize it easily. Cool ride!

No, just no. That Kawi engine is much better than a snowblower engine, dont do it.

can anyone confirm if my gear indicator is broken??

It just spins all the way around there is no clikc or stop point? It can just spin all the way around and can go in and out a slight bit. I would take apart the motor and find out but there is a slight crack on that side so I dont want it to brake apart and not be able to get it back together.

I am also trying to sell the snowblower engine to fund to fix up my engine, how much is it worth?

gear indicator may be broken, if you can roll the whole frame without turning over the motor then its in neutral. Have you checked the basics on the engine? Fuel, Spark, Compresson?

Sorry, Im a noob but I dont quite understand. I havent actually tried to move the indicator while trying to start it. Its somewhat torn apart. I tried everythign to get it started cleaned the carb and checked the spark. I tried the spark but got nothing, and havent tried anything else. I couldnt get a spark and then somebody got me a snowblower engine, but like others have been saying to not use it and that what I have is better.

I am not quite sure how to clean the magneto (sp?) or maybe I should just buy a new one.It needs to be re-wired and everything now. I was thinking of upgrading the entire thing, its kinda ghetto. But not sure how to do it. Does anybody have any good read ups? I was trying to decide what would be better foot brake/gas or hand brake and gas. ANY and ALL advice is listened to and appreciated.

The engine looks between 100-150cc to me, That engine will be much better than your 7.5 snowblower engine. To clean the magneto take the flywheel off, and just get some sand paper and clean up the pickups. Also that engine may have points (not sure) but if it does those should be cleaned off with sandpaper also. Personally i would do food brake/gas, but thats just personal preference. Were there any clutch/shifter hook ups on that kart? I'm thinking the engine may be semi auto (meaning no clutch but it has gears). Maybe you could take more pics of the engine from different angles.

PS: i have that same craftsman drill! mine doesnt have the handles and is bad condition, but its the same haha.

I believe it had a low and high gear on the side of the cart, but something minor on it was broken and didnt engage.
