Just thought i would put it out there. My brother finished a project he had been working on for over 2 years (some may have seen it already there is a few pics around here).

Anyway its all finished and looking well, and just for a finish we blow all the dust and swarf off with the compressor, bad idea.
Didnt realise that the compressor was blowing water with the air, 2 months later and it can be seen.

Always drain your compressors, or this will happen.

There's almost always going to be a little bit of water blown out... as long as there is humidity in the intake air of the compressor, then some will also be blown back out.

But I agree, do drain your compressors...for safety reasons.

Thats why you get a filter for your compressor like this. Not sure how much it really works, but its better than nothing.

Did you use a blower attachment, or just a open hose?

You should always use an attachment on the end, so that it doesnt blow water at your project...

Like this

Something as cheap as that would stop 99% of the water, due to the fact that there is a ridge in the design.... air easily goes around it, but solids/liquids have a difficult time going around it...

Plus you get more range, so those drops should fall somewhat short....

Nope that will do nothing ive had times were ive forgoten to drain the tank on my big compressor and it made spots of water on what i was cleaning off.... always use an inline filter with some type of desicant in side the filter... that will get all the water out and if you paint you need one anyway.

Dude, having a blow gun will in now way stop the water. I have that exact one, and i can tell you, if you have condensation in your tank it will come out the hose. When air/water is under 100psi, a little ridge isnt going to stop a thing.


Oh, side note, thanks for this thread. it reminded me its time to drain my tank.

The compressor I have access to, has never shot water... and I figured that was because it has a blower.... but then again, it used primarily for tyres/tires..

If you use your compressor for painting, odds are you've got a moisture trap, or you should. At any rate, as the compressor takes in outside air and compresses it, the humidity in the air turns into droplets, which sit in the bottom of the tank and collect. You MUST drain your tank regularly, or you risk rust. Rust=bad. Sooner or later, POP goes the weasel. Moisture traps to a good job of stopping the freshly-compressed water vapour, especially the dessicant-type. But you still have to drain your tank frequently. And no, there is no blow-gun type device that will stop the moisture, ridges do nothing. Much of the moisture is still in vapour for, suspended in the air being blown out.

A little bit of rust never hurt anybody. Toughen up. You should drain your compressor every couple of months or so (i do it every like 6 months or when ever i remember) and i always get out quite a bit of water.

not alot of room where i live, so stop going on about the 2 month thing Russ. As a result of not enough room the project had to be put in a little wooden box made for it, last time it was out was 2 months ago, so giving a precise time it took for the rust to accumulate would not be that accurate. It has never been used in the rain and only in the summer/dry days, when you take such care of something and discover what has happened you tend to be a bit annoyed.

And im not saying that its ruined from the rust, its not by far. The cover is painted up now and not noticeable, if any one wants pics just pm me.

Just a warning to drain your compressor, its something that is overlooked and if anyone out there thinks they are great and know everything just spare a thought for people who might not know.

Sorry about rant.
