Hello new friends. I picked this buggy up today for $800 cash. It runs really good and strong. Very fast that really suprised me. Anyway I was wondering if anyone cn tell me about my buggy. The motor has Cammex on the head. looks to be a snowmobile motor. I can see some Odyssey stuff on it as well. Was told to run half race gas is all I really know the motor.

Also what was this raced in? was there a class for these back in the 80's? If so what was it called?

Any info on the motor or Cammex?

Is my rearend a Oddyssey set up?

Anyway I was smiling ear to ear ridding this today. It is very loud and really rips.

I will give her a complete makeover this winter.

Here some pics

Oh yah there is like a torsion bar on the right hand side on the rear suspension. Does this saying it was like a flate track racer at one time?

A dingo I just finished

So how do you think I did for value? needs nothing really. Nice hand made pipe to. This buggy pulls wheelies with ease. And really screams. It has got to be a pumped snowmobile motor of some type. Ws also told it was an speacial 80's race engine.

Enjoy

Any info on this buggy or engine would be cool.

More pics of the engine please? It certainly looks like it has Odyssey bottom end cases and transmission, my guess is it's an after market water cooled barrel and head for an oddy.

Pics of the torsion bar you mention? Do you mean an anti roll bar?

Different suspension setting on one side to the other generally means oval track speedway racing.

I'm intrigued, I think you got a bargain!

Thanks

Hayden

I saw one of those today when I was passing a consignment lot. It was nothing but rust, the engine didn't want to turn over, 4 flat and cracked tires and a BIRDS NEST IN THE ENGINE AREA. It had a motorcycle engine in it though.

the wanted $1200.00 and I laughed hysterically. So I think you got a great deal.

Here you go. Not sure what they call this bar. What type of rear suspension set up is this? Trailing arm suspension? Is the front end Odyessy? Looks wider and more bulky that the stock odyessy? Perhaps and aftyermarket Odyessy front end?

Here are some pics of the torsion bar???? and motor

That carb is huge as well. Dam near as big as the jug and head. I have drove some odyessy in the past. If this is an odyessy motor it is really pumped up.

It very well could be an odyessy motor with a Cammex jusg and head. I found that Cammex was making heads and jugs for the 250r three wheelers in the early 80's As fasr as I could find out they did not make complete engines.

The buggy is going to get stripped down and painted with Por15 hardnose paint. Lots of chrome and new parts. I want to keep it all 80's original if I can. It looks small scall from the pics. But this thing is like little car really. Here is a side by side with a dingo.

My last winter project that I just sold. I used some of the money from the bar stool to buy the buggy. I am happy with the trade for this stool is way and I mean way to dangerous. Did I say way? Benn tossed and seen friends get tossed to many times to keep it. Faceplant is what I called it. The live axle and turning radius made this sting crazy. No gove with 18lbs springs, carb, cam and flywheel made this thing rip pretty good. It has one flaw??? to much weight on the back axle. Front was to light.

Ps dont try that pipe on a clone. It did not work until I cut off the end.

that's a trailing arm. a torsion bar is used in place of a spring in the suspension and an anti roll bar is a torsion bar across the width of the car that keeps the car from pitching side to side

So they yellow bar with the hiem joints is called a trailing arm right? Just wanted to make sure you are talking about the yellow bar and not the chrome bars on the side? What do they call the chrome bars on each side? Thanks

I found the CRP stamp on the block casting as well. So this is a matching block and jug and head.

Maybe Cammex did make complete race engines? I have founbd threads on google about the water cooled racing heads Cammex was making for trikes in the 80's. I am going to go over to a vintage trike site and see what I can dig up?

They don't have classes for them any more of course, but they did. Calvin Pollet now owns CPI which designs and casts Banshee and 250R big bore cylinders. Yes the rear shocks are Works and the fronts look like Ohlins which were definitely the best back in the 80's. The cylinder is probably like a cr250 cylinder cast to fit to the aircooled ody bottom end. Do you have any old 3 wheeler mags with them in it? I can scan some old Odyssey stuff and post it here if you like. The expansion chamber is a hand made cone pipe too. Real nice Odyssey.

Cammex was in South Coffeyville, Oklahoma which is about a 5 mile drive from my house.

Three wheeler world hooked me up. I got the contact info for the thw owner of Cammex. He now owns CPI Racing Heads. CPI makes one of the best heads for banshees and 250s. I will update when I find out more.

Been told that I have a nice peace of Odyessy racing history. That I should restore it like it is. I am getting pretyy ecited now. It looking more like I got a real bargain for this thing. Been offered over $2000 from other buggy site looking for info. Multable offers too.

I like the trailing arm front suspension. The jumping kart in the first photo gives me some worry. It looks like the tie rods sit well below the floor of the kart and they could easily snag on something. All in all, great find. I'm jealous.

I found the owner of Cammex (CRP Cammex Racing Products) now is called CPI Racing Heads.

I guess the bottom end guts are all Odyessy. The Cases jug and head are all Cammex products.

This is from the old Cammex owner. He is a member over at three wheeler world.

You do indeed have a piece of Odyssey Racing history, GREAT FIND!
The engine is a CAMMEX Racing Products, (CRP) 250cc engine.....(unless it had one of the "Open Class" engines, then it could be as large as a 360cc), The cylinder was the same cylinder and head that we made to fit onto the 81-84 ATC250R engine, that cylinder and head were built for the 250 class AND the open class, so the only way to tell which you may have is to pull the head and take some measurements.
We built the cases for the Odyssey to adapt the existing Cammex cylinders to that engine compartment. The engine should run very well, ones just like that, (in fact....could have been that one....lol), won quite a few AATVA Nationals in their day.
There were many guys that ran the engines, but you might look for anything about one of the "Bagus" brothers, (may have been spelled "Bogus"), the two brothers ran very hard, won several major races, and I believe at least one of them, (Mike Bagus.....I think), either won or took 2nd in the National Championship Points a year or two.

I WOULD LOVE to find one of those for playing at Little Sahara, even though they were closed course machines, (before there were "side-by-sides"....lol), they would be a BLAST in the dunes!
When you have to tear it down, take down some numbers and call the shop.....I would be glad to help you keep it fresh and going strong.

You sir are the luckiest man on earth, not only did you get a bargain, that bargain turned out to be an old race buggy in very good condition.

Well done mate

Thanks

When jumping the tie rods are low. Once back on the ground they are up pretty high. Also the first photos in the magazine is a original Odyssey frame. My buggy is the full frame style like it the last pics red buggy. Looks to be a little different steering set up on the two.
