Okay, this may sound overkill,
but what about a set of proximity sensors like a modified park distance control
that doesn't beep, but overrides the throttle sensor.
This way the van isn't only safe from being scratched,
but your kids cannot run so./sth. over -like your neighbors cat- too.

I'm following this great build closely. Before making the Mini Jeep I thought of making a VW bus and I've never ruled.

I like it. There might be a few bugs. cant park too close to anything. The position of the sensors will be key. I have rigged something up in work and I will try it later to see how it works. I'm thinking I might have to use 4 sensors. front back and both sides. Ultra safe(boring) but Im not the one driving it. Thanks for the idea Sid . its funny how you sometimes caint see the wood for the trees. (I have quite a stash of old sensors and relays in my desk here and I never thought of that)

Cheers
Tony

There are hidden or invisible sensors (antenna style behind the actual body) but I'm not sure if they're for plastic -like modern bumpers- only...
I think Hirschmann makes them for example (if you have Hirschmann of your side of the pond *shrugs*)

But I think you can not only completely shut down the throttle, but also reduce the top speed to 0.5mph or something so that you can actually park near certain objects or run into them at a speed that is impossible to be harmful.

I'm sure you can figure something out,
like reduced speed for front & rear and complete shutdown for the unprotected sides.

The VW bus is a T2. The Bug and Ghia are Type 1.

What an awesome build! Wish I had the metal fab skills the OP does.

Im pretty sure that 'sid knew that or he would not have called the bus a "samba'..... not everyone knows what a Samba is....... 'Sids one helluva smartguy.....

A little explanation:

T doesn't stand for Typ but for Transporter;
and in Germany we're currently counting T5 (T6 is scheduled for 2014-15)
If you're talking internal numbering, then you're partially right, then the microbus is Typ2 but ONLY the Bug is Typ1;
the Ghia is either Typ14 or Typ34 depending on the Ghia you're talking about.
Engine wise the Ghia Typ14 has a Typ1 engine, just as a bug,
the ghia typ34 instead has a typ4 engine, just as a 411/412 (Typ 4)

And the Samba is within the first Transporter in that line, a T1.

Every Samba is a T1 but not every T1 is a Samba btw.
Samba is the one with the eight additional windows in the roof (microbus deluxe)

So no, T1 is the microbus I'm talking about ;)
we call them "Bulli" by the way.

....... 'Sids one helluva smartguy.....
Thank you, I'm starting to blush already

Sid you are wise in the ways of VW. Have you owned any? We are big fans in my house hence the kart. Trying to get the kids involved early. We have a
hightop bay 1978(not in use)
tintop bay 1973(camper)
split panel 1964(project)
The kart is based on the split panel project. image below.
I intend going with the same color and sign writing.

I had a VW Porsche 914 (typ 4 engine 2ltr) until my spine refused to use it anymore seven years later (also it wasn't in good shape when I got it, and wasn't getting better over time), in that time I made some friends in the aircooled VW scene.
And since we never had enough money at hand, we always repaired them ourselves,
so I spend a lot of time on my back under different bugs, bullis (T1&T2), an 181 and a Typ3 and of course my deathtrap,
unfortunately no Samba (one reason why I want one I guess):(

I was hoping you add windows (23 ;)) to make one to be honest.
With Safari windshields :drool5:
But any T1 is great to have!!!

And the T2 is also a very cool microbus, I like the tintop more, I never was really into more head space, or even those folding tent roofs whatever you call them over there ;)

If I had to choose, a beige white safari windowed Samba with polished 15" Fuchs wheels (911 from the 70s)

I think for the kids I'd go for a more colourful paintjob than darkgrey and white lettering,
don't get me wrong; very cool looking that way, but for kids *shrugs*

Anyway, I'm already impressed and I'm sure you will end up with a Kart I'd love to be able to build myself ;)

I made some Front tubes to keep little feet off the wheels. I made up a rib test piece for the side panels.
Not really happy with it. I should have made a few more test pieces. I think I will try and rig something up to press the rib rather than trying to beat it in to a mold.

sure its a learning experience.

Whatever you do, it would be better than me anyway

Disgusting isn't it?
He could just roll over it with a truck and it'll look good.
That's not fair! :(

For the side panels I'd cheat (because I hadn't been kissed by talent that often ;))
that is, flat side panels and a matching thinwall pipe section welded on for the rib.
