They works like a clutch; you set it up so when you release the pedal/lever a spring pulls an idler pulley onto the belt, creating the desired tension

Thousands of ride on lawn mowers use them... Ok, the gearing on a go kart is significantly different so, belts will wear quicker but, I wouldn't think that would be too quick

yeah, i'll just stick with a clutch now. im only chasing 6-7hp around what a clone engine puts out. I'm just after a fun kart that is good and reliable and cheap. If i want more power, and it will be a matter of time I will go down the track of a torque converter, or a belt drive with a manual tension clutch. at the moment I really need a go kart to put my Victa on. So I best be off and start that!

U will find a belt tensioner clutch will be far cheaper than any cent clutch in aus

As for a chainsaw carb

They ain't really tuned to do mid range revs

A chainsaw is flat out or idle and nothing in between
These traits will affect your kart

CPR now has clutches at almost reasonable prices...

McCulloch built some of the most succesful vintage race karts back in the 60's using 50cc chainsaw engines...

Having said that, I think a chainsaw carb would be too small for a victa...

Gripske & Sons have a clutch and adaptor to suit Victa full crank engines. They are a wholesaler so you would need to order through a mower shop. A lot of hardware shops buy from them too. The clutch is a 12 tooth, suits 35 chain - I have just ordered one.

As for a carb, I agree with the other guys - a chainsaw carb won't do what you need. We tried one on a friend's 125cc and it performed pretty ordinary - went better with the standard Victa G3.

You could use a carb from one of the Chinese pit bikes, we tried this also and performance is great. You will need to make up a manifold for it and install a port for the decompressor tube. These carbs are available on ebay ex Melbourne for about $45. I'm going to use one of these on my 160. I will post some pics over the weekend and you will see the manifold.

For the ignition question - You can buy an ignition module which will allow you to eliminate points and condenser. Bynorm (Ariens) stock them, most mower shops deal with these guys.

Depending on where you're located in qld and what model engine you have, I may be able to help you out with a crankcase half as I have a heap of parts here.

Pm me if you like.
