Van Go Kart

As luck would have it I stumbled across this old Fiberglass Beauty.I knew at first glance that i had to have it.

What better than an old 70's van for a new project. I'm not too sure what the plan is just yetbut the wheels are turning.

I messed around with a few ideas for the frame and engine location tonight. I think I am going to build this one with the engine forward of the driver some thing like this

Kinda the look I'm after

Oh ya!!
the Zingers were cool but were for display only with non functional engines and components But man they were nice.

I don't plan on any big blocks or monster tires but similar in the style

Alright I started to figure out my strategy for the frame. I am going to use a 125cc 3 forward with revers ATV engine that I'm gonna build around so traditional thinking is out the window.
I scored an old quad frame for some parts mostly steering and rear axle. A buddy lent me his tubing bender and it's slow but works well.

This is whats left of the ATV frame..

The basic frame lay out

Ya Kelly those zingers are super cool. I will be attending a car show this summer with my Custom 70's Van and hopefully this little go kart van.Chuck Miller (the creator of the zingers) will be there with his zingers!!

A couple more pics of the frame and engine

I used the A arms from the quad along with the steering linkage but i think it might have been easier to start from scratch but here it is

And a little bit more..
I made the mistake of using some galvanized pipe for the down tubes and what a mistake it was. stinky, crappy welds and all. but the bends were nice so i dealt with it.

Good point Landuse I generally don't use it but it was left over from another project so there are only two pieces and its 3/4" schd 40 pipe too thick for a kart but the rest is thin wall 3/4" tubing. The HF Bender works ok but too have mixed results meaning it works when it wants to and sometimes wont bend to a full 90 but after a few choice words a few cold beverages it works well.....LOL.
