After months of searching for great priced mini bikes I finally found a great deal. In fact I found two. Guy wanted $175 each. Ended up getting both for $315.

Both need gas changed out and carbs clean. Some gas lines are old and cracking. One needed pull start fixed

The first one has modified predator engine. Sounded fast. Will need to clean up and see if I can safely test theses out tomorrow.

So far even if I have to replace an engine I think I did good.

Yah great find so far. Even though they both need some work i think they are both worth it.

So i guess i could start a ton of new threads or just continue on this one and show progress on getting them running.

So lets start with the modified engine one.
IMAG1823.jpg

(foreshadowing) This maybe my next build off bike!

So i took off the air filter cleaned out the carb.
IMAG1829.jpg

Removed the gas tank because the gas was old and the fuel line was cracked. Off to the store to get more fuel line.
IMAG1828.jpg

Dumped gas out and replaced fuel line.
IMAG1827.jpg

Put everything back together. and fire it up. wow loud once it starts......wow that was really loud? why did it stop running? pull cord, [sounds of parts rambling around].......oh i see. The starter coil magnet seems to have exploded.
IMAG1835.jpg

yah so i took it apart too see the damage....

...so i take of the pull start / flywheel cover. And wow. just wow. Maybe next time i check that before starting a modified engine.

Fan blades are all gnarled up.
IMAG1837.jpg IMAG1836.jpg

You can see the magnet is missing!
IMAG1838.jpg

When i took the coil off, the engine mount is broken behind it! not sure what i can do about that? anyone?
IMAG1839.jpg

Then the coil is kind of jacked up. I think this part is not that expensive to buy. And the magnet looks to screw in place? i did find a top of a screw.
IMAG1840.jpg IMAG1841.jpg

And then of course all the stuff i could pull out of that mess. mostly magnet and a metal plate? looks like it was holding magnet in place? with screw?
IMAG1842.jpg

so :censored: where do i start on this one. new coil and somehow replace magnet? anyone do that on the predator engine? just a screw? nut bolt? glue? jb weld? ill research it. reply if you must :)

Oh so the good news. Took carb apart on other mini bike and cleaned it and put back together. fired right up. Chain jumped off on first ride but it was rusted badly. So cleaning that up and greasing it down got to do one lap tonight on it. Runs okay did not get to go full throttle. maybe tomorrow.

So one bike running with minimal effort. just that first one...ugh....going to be one of those. should just buy new pred and be done with it. swap exhaust and carb and call it good :)

---------- Post added at 09:32 PM ---------- Previous post was at 09:25 PM ----------

how can i tell if this flywheel is same as the pred i have?
http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-FLYWHEE...582307?hash=item2cbc695b63:g:MdMAAOSwLqFV7gRK

10 bucks to fix my problem sounds great :)

okay i got it. Mine is the 69727 model. right on the engine. imagine that. :wai: i get to change a flywheel! yay

So I got the second Baja running. Replaced chain it was jammed up and rusted. Soaking now, maybe it will be good for another project.

So only issue on this second one is. I'm getting gas back up in air filter? Possible valves sticking? Sending gas to air filter? Ran down street and back and engine started choking. Noticed a good amount of gas by ohv cover. Where the carb hose connects. Looks like gas coming from carb hose but could be valves. I'll need to open it up and look.

Taking break now. Getting hot working on that pos. Was a fun loop around the block. Can't wait to get them both running solid.

Oh you get to change a flywheel. Cool
Here is a Video from ARC. this is about a Billet but the Video is Very informative and the basics are the same for any flywheel. It is kinda long but I watched it and learned a bunch. And I never even replaced a flywheel.

Thanks chancer, I think i've watched that one before. good video. Makes me nervous about leaving any lapping on the flywheel!!!! Need to build a clean room before i do this :roflol:

I think i only need to lap, clean and install. no timing on this one. just a standard pred flywheel replacement. keep timing with the key as is.

The more i look at this engine i think they only added air filter and straight pipe exhaust. looks like governor is still in place. I may open up the crank case and check. Maybe remove while im in there :) once it starts running.

Although, Maybe i dont take any chancers by messing with internals yet

What about this part being broken?
IMAG1839.jpg

anyone have an idea on this fix? JB WELD? i dont think i can weld on this with Flux core MIG right?

My thought was i could drill out the threads on it. Put a long enough bolt to go through the broken part and into the engine. That way i can make it a tight fit. And add some JB weld around it to hold in place?

Lots of vibration on the engine dont want this to happen again.

Cant weld no, its aluminum. JB weld should work fine though. If there is enough threads in there, you could screw in a stud through the broken piece and into where it should be and just use a nut.

Harbor Freight has Predators on sale again, maybe it would be better to just get a new one? If the outside is exploding, I'd hate to see the inside.

Stud is a good idea. I would like to salvage it first. Learning experience.

$15 in parts...or $99 new... yah it's a toss up.

I wanted to play with charging coils and stuff on preds. To see if getting electricity for lights could be done easily. So if I do buy a new motor I can use bad one for experiments.

So following some online directions on removing a flywheel i headed off to the store to get enough small rope to fill the cylinder. And i also needed a spark plug socket for the 13/16 spark plug (you would of thought i already had this somewhere, maybe i have two now)

So i picked up a 50 Feet of ̶p̶a̶r̶a̶c̶o̶r̶d̶. (Edit: i've been told this is bad and to use Cotton Rope)

Removed spark plug and shoved as much ̶p̶a̶r̶a̶c̶o̶r̶d̶ i could into the engine :)

With a breaker bar i loosened the nut holder on the fly wheel. And then with a crowbar and hammer i managed to break loose the flywheel from the engine! yay. half way there.

Also received the ignition coil today and lapping grease. So im only waiting on flywheel and tracking shows it in san jose. so maybe it shows up tomorrow and i can install it all this weekend.

Not going to reinstall onto mini bike until this engine runs great!

May need to replace engine mount. There are only holes not slots and does not allow for tightening the chain.

Nice find!! People around here want 400+ for one of those lol

I will parrot this statement since I live in Georgia as well. I'd of paid the asking price in a hearbeat as those minis look to be in pretty good shape. Even the motor issue is relatively low cost with either a $100 replacement or buying a block for $30-$40 plus flywheel.

Well i had $15 in my wallet and when i went to ATM i tried to pull $340 but it only let me pull $300 out. so i ended up with 315 on me :)

If it was a hard $350 i would of drove back to a bank and tried to get more cash. But the guy selling does this on the side, so i think it was a win for him.

He had boats and boat motors, bikes, all sorts of cool stuff! made me wish i had more money on me, made me glad i didn't have more money on me. i like junk and would be broke with a pile of junk if i didn't stop myself sometime.

I think all Builders/Tinkerers/Hackers are slightly prone to hording junk that maybe useful one day. :roflol:

Okay so this week has been slow progress. But progress non the less.

Picked up a bolt that is longer then the original coil bolts. Mixed up some JB Weld and put the broken mount back in place. After a day of drying i will pull out bolt. Then reinstall with some RED thread locker. Cut bolt head off, re thread and use a Nylon lock nut instead.

should be ready for the new flywheel coming in later this week. Then i can get this engine back up and running.

In the mean time i started another thread on color here http://www.diygokarts.com/vb/showthread.php?t=36110 I will pull apart everything and paint the chassis while i have engine out.

Lets cross our fingers and hope engine works when im done. no need for new pred just yet.
