I'm out trying to start the 5.5 ohv motor that came with this murray kilowatt (i think)

It's not on the kart at the moment but I justp held it down and. Pulled on the rope good and felt like it about ripped my arm off the ripped the handle out of my leathery hands , but kinda hurt.

I guess it should be mounted before i try to pull it, but I have aoways been able to pull the cord on the motors while they are out,

Is there any reason It's so hard to pull, I'm mounting it now to see how much that helps

Nope, putting the motor on the kart didn't help one bit. It still is ripping skin off my hand

Please someone tell me, or help me figure out why It's so hard to pull

Just realized, It's only hard to pull at one point in the cycle, of the flywheel spinning around, kinda like i speed bump in the pull start.

Not sure if anybody can make sense of that

if the engine sat for a while then fuel may have leaked into the cylender

take out the spark plug out and turn it over

other wise souperman is probs on the money

Are you sure its not just hitting compression? Does it happen every four rotations?

If it's waaay too hard to pull through the compression stroke, check the following-

1) Ignition timing. A sheared flywheel key can do this. Disconnect the spark plug lead and try pulling. If it still feels the same, that's not the problem. If it just got a lot easier, key may be sheared.

2) Hydrolocked engine- Cylinder full of water, gas, or oil. Remove spark plug, and pull rapidly several times to clear any fluid out of cylinder. Keep your face clear of the hole. If this was the problem, investigate/repair cause and change oil immediately.

3) Valve lash- if it's way out of spec, it will nullify the effect of the "easy start" compression relief mechanism. Restore valve lash to spec.

it happens every single rotation, im gonna go out and pull the plug and try to clear the cylinder. I am hoping thats the problem seeing it seems the easiest to fix, i hope :p

Pulled tge plug It's easy to spin now, I tried pulling the cord to get gas out but nothing happens, how can I get gas out if there is any in there? Should I change oil before I even try to start it?

IF a hydrolocked cylinder was your problem, you would have been well aware of liquid or mist shooting out of the cylinder. Since it didn't happen, run the other test I laid out for you. Try it with the plug in, but NOT connected to the wire. If it's hard with the spark plug lead connected but easy with it disconnected, check the key. If there's no difference with or without spark, check valve lash against spec.

i apologize for the extra thread, i was just being super impatient. my daughter was napping which is the only time i get to work on the motors and karts and i was just trying to get some info quickly.

once again im sorry, ill do my best not to let it happen again

are lash caps needed for the motor to run, i just watched another youtube vid that showed there were lash caps on the valves and mine dosnt have those. are they able to be ordered, are they needed??

Ok I'm pretty sure i set the valve clearance on the tecumseh ohv 5.5 properly, but I still pet the speed bump in the pull start cycle. It rips it out of my hand when i really try to pull

The kid I got it from said he used a huge drill to start it, would that have anything to do with it.. obviously I'm fishing for a solution and making stupid guesses now

Feed clean rope into the cylender to stop the engine turning

Nylon rope is best as u don't want any fibres left in the cylender

dang, this go karting requires a lot of different tools and supplies. Unfortunately i dont have any so im gonna have to go spend more moneys on some rope, unless you can think of a quick alternative

i just tried to pull the flywheel and that sucker is on there, cant even get the bolt to break free, even with my breaker bar
