Pull string broke a few days ago and while I was replacing it I decided that I would trying to setup a kill switch since in a few days I plan to carry it to a shop to get scrub pads welded on it. This is a brigs and straton engine.

Normally the engine will crank after 2 or 3 pulls and me adjusting manual choke.

Well I went online and read to setup a kill switch I need to go off the tab at the back of the coil and ground it to kill the engine. Correct ?

I took piece of speaker wire and connected side 1 a(gold wire) to the tab on the coil. I then grounded the side 1 b (silver) to the engine. Started engine and touched the the opposite ends 2a gold to 2b silver and the engine shut off. Now it will not start at all no matter how many times I pull it. After using kill switch does the engine need to set a while before cranking ? Of is there something that has to be done ?

If not then what did I do wrong ?

I grabbed the top of the spark plug at the same time as I pulled the cord and it does not shock me. If the coil was working shouldnt it shock the crap out of me if I am holding it (top of spark plug) at the same as I pull the cord ?

i dont know about your problem, but a kill switch more or less just connects the sparkplug to some large chunk of metal, frame, block, etc, to prevent it from sparking

Try disconnecting the kill switch from the 2 wires... Will it start now?

If not, disconnect the wire you installed at the 'tab at the back of the coil'... Will it start now?

Hooking up a kill switch like that should not have damaged the magneto, but maybe the grounding tab was slightly loose/defective, and slightly moving it around while connecting the kill-sw. wire just finished it off.

Does your briggs have points/condenser? Maybe you've just got a problem with those and its just a terrible coincidence they started acting up soon after you had installed the kill switch... Sometimes strange/bizarre coincidences like this happen.

Per your picture its the electronic ignition coil: (solid state)

I assume that these are cheap and easy to replace ... I assume I should pull the one off the engine to find a parts number to order a new one ? Or do I need to find a part number off the engine ?

yes.

the 2 bolts that mount it to the block is it. youll have to remove the flywheel blower housing though.
