The advantage to diesals is that they are pretty reliable.

They are best used to running long and hard, such as the freeway.

IMO, I would love a diesel truck, the prices were pretty cheap a few months ago, but I have a feeling that city driving would not be too good.

Industrial diesels like the ones you play with every day are the large scale equivalent to a stock lawn mower engine. Banks was referring to Small engines in personal vehicles. As for Only 450 ft/lbs of torque being not enough? I've go a 1988 Chevy C-30 dually factory rated with only ~250 HP and ~300 ft/lbs t. that has a GVW rating of 15,500 lbs and a GCWR of 24,000. And I know it will do it because I got caught by the weighmaster with a combined load of 23,000 lbs. Too bad The farm only had a 16,000 lb plate on the truck.

Banks want to limit/lower the torque to keep everything downstream of the engine alive. In Stock Form all three of the major small truck makers can shred the rest of the drive train without breaking a sweat. Yes, torque is what does the work; however, Horsepower is the rate that the work is being done.

I'm going to have to pass on the rest of this; it's late and I'm tired.

You'll have to buy a used one; Detroit Diesel went 4 stroke across the board for new power back in the mid '90's. One of the neighbors has a 12V-63 in one of their silage trucks (12 cylinders, 63 Cubic Inches Per Cylinder). Recordings can't touch the sound this thing makes; you have to be there, on the side of the road as it passes you at 2200 RPM......

now if i was going to buy a diesel truck for daily driving and not using it for heavy hauling i would look for a 89-93 dodge ram with a with a non turbo Cummins. no matter what trans it has you can decent mileage but having the standard trans would probably get you the best mileage. i know 28mpg with a has been achieved with a 727 trans. now if there was a 5 or 6 speed behind it i think that number might go up a bit.

they did not all have turbo's. it is expensive problem to fix if anything with the turbo goes bad.

well auto transmissions got the nick name slush box for a fairly good reason. it is not no new fancy diesel but it will get the job done and get great fuel mileage compares to new trucks. it just don't have the same hp and torques as the new one but it makes up for it by being a couple thousand pounds lighter.

my friends selling a truck so i looked at it today. its an '85 GMC sierra. 350 v8, auto. 4x4.

and it only has 70,000 miles!!! he wants 800 bucks

i wish i took some pictures, but the frame is MINT! it has the original factory paint on it, and no rust at all! the engine runs great, and i saw a new torque converter when i looked underneath

the bad: passenger rocker panel is half gone, door is dented bad, wheel wells rusted, the whole body is just a mess. the dash is cracked bad, window cranks dont work, interior is totally stripped.

if i put a new cab and bed on it, itd be a new truck.

hes not trying to sell it so i can think about it for a long time..

it looks like this but waaaay more beat up...

thats the kind of truck I would love to have!

Theoretically, if you get this one, are you just going to part out your old truck or do something else? If you are really considering getting this truck, do lots of research and it might help to make alist of what needs to be done and price it out. Just so you don't fall into a money pit.

I am assuming this is a trusted friend, so talk it over with him as well.

The Chev got a solid front axle? That'd be a bonus!

Better to have to do bodywork than frame, suspension, driveline, etc. A lot less critical.

just cause it says 70000 miles doesnt mean it those trucks didn't have a 6th number on the odmenter so it could have well over that you would have to ask the first owner and see id say buy it

This may be true, although in some states, odometer readings are taken at every inspection and title exchange, and there's a checkbox for "not actual".

That model has 6 digits on the odometer; the 70,000 miles that blue listed is only 5 (6 if you count the 1/10 slot).
