Torque converter issues

So I cleaned the entire torque converter today with brake cleaner and sanded some areas, it was definitely dirty. I put it all back together and it did the same thing. I decided to try and lower the idle and it definitely helped. It seems like upon first start it’s fine, spinning freely, than about 10 seconds in I can see the driver pulley expand and start to grip the belt. I took a video that I’ll try to include. Maybe a new belt will help more. It’s much better though and can definitely be used until I sort it out more. Thanks all for the help, I’ve learned a lot here

the driver clutch may not have the correct stock springs. the previous owner may have fooled with the stock springs in the driver to achieve activation at a lower rpm, thinking he could get more speed by lowering the bottom end. what color are the springs in the drive clutch, usually the color will rell you the rpm range they are set for. My guess ???????

They didn’t have any color, just a metal coloring really. Maybe it wore off? I will say that this kart has a lot of low end power, it takes very little acceleration to take off quickly

if you look at the go power, omb, and other websites, many have a graph that tells you exactly what rpms the clutch will grab with a specific spring set. you can vary the take off point from 1200 rpm in increments up to 2500 or more. check those out, they're cheap so order a few different sets
so you can fine tune the rpm that activates the torque converter. if your idle is around 800 rpm....I would get the springs for 1000 or 1100 rpm. then you can start your motor....stand there and look at it.....then sit down without it running over your leg

Do like redflash advised. The painted color wears off quickly, not even that prominent when new. But the spring sets are cheap and work exactly like they are supposed to. Also very easy to change. If you have disassembled your driver then you have already done it. Very easy to tune the engagement point to right where you want it. Yours are probably old and weak, letting the engagement start at too low of an rpm to be practical.

I just read an article describing how to choose and adjust the springs like you recommended, that’s definitely my next move. These go karts are sneaky little things, always slipping their hands in my pocket 😁

AW come on. You can't fit the whole kart in your pocket. Just many many little individual parts, but not all at the same time. By now I 'm sure you have seen that the "garter" springs are only about 10 bucks, and they WILL fix your early engagement problem.

Update - the springs did the trick! When I took the old springs off it was obvious one was very stretched out. I put a new set of comet blue springs on and it’s all good now. I’ve learned a lot in my short time here, much thanks to all
