YES! You can do that and that is what many people do for some "spring" in the ride.

However, some tires might be too stiff in the sidewall, it depends on the tire. Some tires are more like balloons and the first generation Honda ATC 3-wheeler comes to mind. They used very little air pressure but it was designed that way because the trikes had no suspension at all....

It will help. But don't get your hopes up. The help will be very little. Helpful suggestion, since you seem to be quite handy with tools and such. Make your seat with 4" to 6" of foam rubber. It will give you a lot more comfort than lowering the tire pressure. Ask me how I know.

Wish they still made the balloon tires for the Honda US90 and some of the early 6x6 ATVs. Truly a shock absorbing tire but they were "too weird" being an all-in-one affair; no separate rim and tire or hubless and rimless.

I think the hub or "pseudo rim" was about 3" so it was as much of an all-tire tire as possible. They were really soft too, probably akin to using inner tubes for tires.

Otherwise, the next best thing is the tires and rims they use for modern 6x6 amphibious ATVs.
